The transfer of technology from research to structural engineering and construction practice is illustrated using two cases of the implementation of innovative engineering methods and technologies in the renewal and 'upcycling' of existing bridges, namely ...

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), or coordination polymers (CPs), are networks of organic ligands and metal nodes that form ordered or disordered structures. By selecting appropriate building blocks, CPs with tailored pore shapes, dimensions, and surface ch ...

An analytical framework is presented to describe the attenuation of regular and irregular waves propagating over floating seaweed farms. Kelp blades suspended on longlines are modelled, as a first approximation, as rigid bars rotating around their upper en ...

Personalized Environmental Control Systems (PECS) can improve both comfort and energy efficiency by shifting indoor climate control toward localized, occupant-tailored comfort, unlike conventional systems that condition entire, partly unoccupied spaces uni ...

The proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) is successfully employed in a variety of projection-based methods for parametric model order reduction (pMOR) of large dynamical systems. It extracts the most energetic modes describing the dynamics of a system fro ...

Biomimetic and bioinspired design is not only a potent resource for roboticists looking to develop robust engineering systems or understand the natural world. It is also a uniquely accessible entry point into science and technology. Every person on Earth c ...

In a MOSFET transistor, the subthreshold swing defines the switching efficiency, and the associated slope factor, or so-called body factor, is a critical parameter in charge-based models. However, in an advanced Fully -Depleted Silicon-On-Insulator (FDSOI) ...

Thermal stability of perovskite materials is an issue impairing the long-term operation of inverted per-ovskite solar cells (PSCs). Herein, the thermal attenuation mechanism of the MAPbI3 films that deposited on two different hole transport layers (HTL), p ...

Majority of the past research on application of machine learning (ML) in earthquake engineering focused on contrasting the predictive performance of different ML algorithms. In contrast, the emphasis of this paper is on the use of data to boost the predict ...

Small-scale soft mobile robots are an attractive solution to gain access to hard-to-reach places. We demonstrate a thin (similar to 4 mm) and flexible mobile robot, 8 cm x 9 cm, mass 4 g, that uses 6 electrostatic zipping actuators with hydraulic coupling, ...

This paper proposes and experimentally validates a joint control and scheduling framework for a grid-forming converter-interfaced Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESSs) providing multiple services to the electrical grid. The framework is designed to dispat ...

Silicon photonic circuits are rapidly growing in complexity and spreading to new applications. However, programmable circuits consume much power and require active electrical interfaces. For the first time, we demonstrate a nonvolatile photonic MEMS pi-pha ...

Compressor fouling is one of the most prevalent fault modes that contribute to the performance degradation of a gas turbine power plant. Off-line washing is a standard maintenance procedure to recover the fouling degradation, but with washing cost. In this ...

Les deltas lacustres sont des systèmes largement anthropisés rendant des services écosystémiques importants à l’Homme et à son environnement. Les travaux de protection contre les crues du siècle passé ont conduit à considérer l’embouchure comme un vecteur ...

Background Spinal cord injury leading to paraplegia affects the mobility and physiological well-being of one in a thousand people. Powered exoskeletons can temporarily restore the ability to walk. Their relevance in daily life is still limited because of l ...

River inflows have a major influence on lake water quality due to their input of sediments, nutrients and contaminants. After leaving the river channel, river waters form a plume and interact with ambient lake waters. Strong hydrodynamic changes take place ...

We review and compare different fluid-structure interaction (FSI) numerical methods in the context of heart modeling, aiming at assessing their computational ef-ficiency for cardiac numerical simulations and selecting the most appropriate method for heart ...
