A folding fabrication method inspired by origami for carbon fiber-reinforced composites to fabricate three-dimensional structures is presented. PMI foams serve as substrates, making it possible to manufacture this kind of origami-inspired composite sandwic ...

Cellular metallic materials have emerged as a new promising class of materials due to their lightweight porous structures and advanced multi-functional properties. Originally limited to random metallic foams, modern lithography techniques have enabled the ...

Polymer derived SiOC and SiCN ceramics (PDCs) are interesting candidates for additive manufacturing techniques to develop micro sized ceramics with the highest precision. PDCs are obtained by the pyrolysis of crosslinked polymer precursors at elevated temp ...

This work shows how one can probe the micromechanical strength of ceramic reinforcements used in metal matrix composites, which greatly influences the mechanical performance of the composite material yet has seldom been quantified with precision. More spec ...

Fabrication of wear-resistant omniphobic surfaces is a persistent scientific challenge and essential for various applications such as in paint industries, fluid transport, antifouling, reduction of friction drag on ship hulls, and stain resistant textiles. ...

Friction stir processing (FSP) is a solid state route with a capacity of preparing fine grained nanocomposites from metal sheets. In this work, we employed this process to finely distribute TiO2 nanoparticles throughout an Al-Mg alloy, aiming to enhance me ...

We measure, using an adaptation of a method designed for ceramic ball bearings, the local strength of a brittle second phase that serves to reinforce a metal. The method uses focused ion beam milling and a nanoindentation device, and is free of artifacts c ...

This paper describes a novel and scalable method for the fabrication of polymer derived ceramics (PDC) structures with high aspect ratio and micrometre scale features. Elastomeric micro-moulds composed of a filling pot are used to deliver via sacrificial m ...

Silicon nitride based ceramics (SiAlONs); tetragonal polycrystalline zirconia (3Y‐TZP); alumina and their composites reinforced with different amount of multi‐ walled carbon‐nanotubes (CNTs) have been processed by Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS). High tempera ...

Transparent polycrystalline alumina has many possible promising areas of application from jewelry and the watch industry to wave guides, energy economical lamp envelopes, and optical windows. Ultrahigh density, submicron sized grains and/or oriented micros ...

Copper-based composites reinforced with alumina particles are produced by two different pro- cesses, namely gas pressure driven infiltration of a porous alumina preform and a two-step in-situ process developed in the course of this work. The resulting comp ...

Petroleum-based polymers and composites are commonly used in a wide variety of application fields. However ecological concerns, increasing oil prices and dwindling natural resources explain why nowadays industrial and public interest is more than ever focu ...

Over the last century, the constant quest to improve the mechanical properties of ceramics has ultimately led to the appearance and production of transparent ceramics. Indeed, microstructural refinement and reduction of the residual porosity after sinterin ...

In the quest of materials for the first wall of the future fusion reactor, it has been shown that oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) ferritic / martensitic (F/M) steels appear to be promising candidates. The inherent good mechanical properties supported b ...

Bone is a complex porous composite structure with specific characteristics such as viscoelasticity and anisotropy, both in morphology and mechanical properties. Bone defects are regularly filled with artificial tissue grafts, which should ideally have prop ...

The present work forms part of an ongoing effort at the Laboratory of Polymer and Composite Technology (LTC) to develop novel solvent-free processing methods for next generation resorbable porous scaffolds for bone replacement, based on supercritical carbo ...

Three types of biomaterials based on hydroxyapatite are synthesized and investigated. Hydroxyapatite nanocrystals or microcrystals precipitated from low-temperature aqueous solutions serve as the initial material used for preparing spherical porous granule ...

Fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) sandwich structures offer several advantages compared to structures made of traditional materials, such as high specific strength, good corrosion resistance, low thermal conductivity and rapid component installation. In this ...

This thesis explores the processing and properties of microcellular aluminium-based materials produced by replication. It includes the development of a pressure infiltration process for net-shape component production, structural characterization of the foa ...

Bone is a natural cellular composite, with a gradient structure going from a loose interconnected core to an outer dense wall, thus minimising bone weight while maintaining a high mechanical performance. Bone can be repaired using either auto- or allo- gra ...
