Guanine crystals are frequently encountered in nature in the beta-polymorph to create structural colors, to enhance the vision of creatures, and for camouflage. Unfortunately, it is challenging to control the crystallization of guanine in aqueous condition ...

Barocaloric (BC) materials provide cheaper and more energy efficient alternatives to traditional refrigerants. Some liquid alkanes were recently shown to exhibit a colossal BC effect, matching the entropy changes in commercial vapour-liquid refrigerants. D ...

We mine from the literature experimental data on the CO2 electrochemical reduction selectivity of Cu single crystal surfaces. We then probe the accuracy of a machine learning model trained to predict faradaic efficiencies for 11 CO2 reduction reaction prod ...

In the third study, the order-disorder phase transition of single-crystal C60 is studied using time-resolved electron microscopy. Solid C60 undergoes a first-order phase transition upon heating to 260 K. This is a structural transition from the low-tempera ...

Aperiodicity and un-conventional rotational symmetries allow quasicrystalline structures to exhibit unusual physical and functional properties. In magnetism, artificial ferromagnetic quasicrystals exhibited knee anomalies suggesting reprogrammable magnetic ...

The spin waves in single crystals of the layered van der Waals antiferromagnet CoPS3 have been measured using inelastic neutron scattering. The data show four distinct spin wave branches with large (>14 meV) energy gaps at the Brillouin zone center indicat ...

The Paris Agreement has made combating climate change a priority and has incentivised innovation for the greentech industry. Higher education institution[s] (HEI[s]) play an important role in fueling this innovation by developing disruptive technologies an ...

High radiation damage resistance has become increasingly important for applications of functional materials in harsh environments. The high radiation damage resistance diamond cubic carbon is a unique material which is considered for radiation environments ...

Beta-dicalcium silicate (beta-C2S), one of the main phases in Portland cement clinker, offers some promising overviews regarding CO2 and energy savings potential compared to alite. Understanding the crystalline structure and reactive sites on beta-C2S surf ...

Technological advancement has been in cadence with material development by improving the purity of single crystals and, at the same time, controlling their imperfections. These capabilities have been especially vital for developing new technolo-gies based ...

Encapsulation techniques open up new possibilities to control the kinetics and location of the release of active ingredients. Despite the progresses achieved to obtain a better control over the dimensions and composition of the capsules, the encapsulation ...

This report assumes that something can be done to guide technology developers and others towards producing technology that does not cause indirect and delayed damage to the environment. It explores the extent to which environmental sustainability concerns ...

The concept of chirality has been influencing many branches of physics for centuries. On the other hand, study of topology and related concepts have recently been introduced to the physics community. Exotic quasiparticles, such as magnetic skyrmions emerge ...

Evolution has found countless ways to transport material across cells and cellular compartments separated by membranes. Protein assemblies are the cornerstone for the formation of channels and pores that enable this regulated passage of molecules in and ou ...

We develop a computationally efficient scheme to accurately determine finite-temperature band gaps for metal halide perovskites belonging to the class ABX(3) (A = Rb, Cs; B = Ge, Sn, Pb; and X = F, Cl, Br, I). First, an initial estimate of the band gap is ...

This thesis reports on a novel method for graphene transfer that is fully UHV compatible, which has remained a challenge for a long time due to the necessity of supporting graphene for transfer and most often requiring supporting layer removal post-transfe ...

Monitoring human sweat with wearable biochemical sensors could give insights into the hydration, fatigue, and health status, tracking the variations of biomarkers non-invasively and in real-time. In this field, organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) a ...

During the last decade, III-VI layered semiconductors (GaSe, InSe, GaS, etc.) have emerged as potential candidates for various applications, such as FET and optoelectronic devices. The properties of this class of layered materials are strongly dependent on ...

Electrocatalytic conversion of CO2 to valuable chemicals is a highly promising route to close the carbon cycle. Herein, Zn catalysts derived from electrochemical reconstruction of ZnO materials are presented as efficient CO2-to-CO catalysts. We found that ...
