Surface stress drives long-range elastocapillary interactions at the surface of compliant solids, where it has been observed to mediate interparticle interactions and to alter the transport of liquid drops. We show that such an elastocapillary interaction ...

Among our five senses, we rely mostly on audition and vision to perceive an environment. Our ears are able to detect stimuli from all directions, especially from obstructed and far-away objects. Even in smoke, harsh weather conditions, or at night â situ ...

In many problems such as phase retrieval, molecular biology, source localization, and sensor array calibration, one can measure vector differences between pairs of points and attempt to recover the position of these points; this class of problems is called ...

We present new techniques to analyze natural local search algorithms for several variants of the max-sum diversification problem which, in its most basic form, is as follows: given an n-point set X subset of R-d and an integer k, select k points in X so th ...

A distance bounding (DB) protocol is a two-party authentication protocol between a prover and a verifier which is based on the distance between the prover and the verifier. It aims to defeat threats by malicious provers who try to convince that they are cl ...

We study the problem of constructing epsilon-coresets for the (k, z)-clustering problem in a doubling metric M(X, d). An epsilon-coreset is a weighted subset S subset of X with weight function w : S -> R->= 0, such that for any k-subset C is an element of ...

We study simultaneous localization and mapping with a device that uses reflections to measure its distance from walls. Such a device can be realized acoustically with a synchronized collocated source and receiver; it behaves like a bat with no capacity for ...

A slab (or plank) is the part of the d-dimensional Euclidean space that lies between two parallel hyperplanes. The distance between the these hyperplanes is called the width of the slab. It is conjectured that the members of any infinite family of slabs wi ...

The most basic form of the max-sum dispersion problem (MSD) is as follows: given n points in R^q and an integer k, select a set of k points such that the sum of the pairwise distances within the set is maximal. This is a prominent diversity problem, with w ...

Greedy (geometric) routing is an important paradigm for routing in communication networks. It uses an embedding of the nodes of a network into points of a space (e.g., R-d) equipped with a distance function (e.g., the Euclidean distance l(2)) and uses as a ...

Let B-M : C x C -> C be a bilinear form B-M(p, q) - p(T)Mq, with an invertible matrix M is an element of C-2x2. We prove that any finite set S contained in an irreducible algebraic curve C of degree d in C determines Omega(d)(vertical bar S vertical bar(4/ ...

Euclidean distance matrices (EDMs) are matrices of the squared distances between points. The definition is deceivingly simple; thanks to their many useful properties, they have found applications in psychometrics, crystallography, machine learning, wireles ...

Recent methods for localization of microphones in a microphone array exploit sound sources at a priori unknown locations. This is convenient for ad-hoc arrays, as it requires little additional infrastructure. We propose a flexible localization algorithm by ...

In this paper, we study the problem of approximately computing the product of two real matrices. In particular, we analyze a dimensionality-reduction-based approximation algorithm due to Sarlos [1], introducing the notion of nuclear rank as the ratio of th ...

Protection of one's intellectual property is a topic with important technological and legal facets. We provide mechanisms for establishing the ownership of a dataset consisting of multiple objects. The algorithms also preserve important properties of the d ...

Let d(1) < d(2) < ... denote the set of all distances between two vertices of a convex n-gon. We show that the number of pairs of vertices at distance d(2) from one another is at most n + O(1). (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. ...

We present a performance analysis for image registration with gradient descent. We consider a typical multiscale registration setting where the global 2-D translation between a pair of images is estimated by smoothing the images and minimizing the distance ...

An important step in the computer simulation of the dynamics of biomolecules is the comparison of structures in a trajectory by exploiting a measure of distance. This allows distinguishing structures which are geometrically similar from those which are dif ...

Efficient solutions for the classification of multi-view images can be built on graph-based algorithms when little information is known about the scene or cameras. Such methods typically require a pairwise similarity measure between images, where a common ...

Impulse Radio Ultra-Wideband, in particular the recent standard IEEE 802.15.4a, is a primary candidate for implementing distance bounding protocols, thanks to its ability to perform accurate indoor ranging. Distance bounding protocols allow two wireless de ...
