Fluids are pervasive in the Earth's crust and saturate fractures and faults. The combination of fluids and gouge layers developing along faults can generate fluids of different viscosities. Such viscous fluids were found to influence the reactivation, fric ...

Friction and wear occur at every interface between solid materials. In the design of mechanical devices, it is desirable to be able to quantify and control the amount of friction and wear, as well as predict their evolution with time. ``Tribology'' is the ...

The lubrication regimes of a contact pair escapement-ruby pallet of a Swiss lever escapement have been investigated combining the theory of fluid lubrication with a well-established kinematic and inverse dynamic multibody model. The kinematic analytical re ...

It is now well established that galaxies have different morphologies, gas contents, and star formation rates (SFR) in dense environments like galaxy clusters. The impact of environmental density extends to several virial radii, and galaxies appear to be pr ...

Shortened dipole antennas based on rectangular dielectric blocks play an important role in ultrahigh field magnetic resonance imaging (UHF-MRI) radio frequency (RF) coil design. However, the generally assumed direct contact with the subject is difficult to ...

This study presents an improvement of an existing tribocorrosion model developed for passive CoCrMo alloys. This model is based on an empirical formalism established by Duncan Dowson in his pioneering works on the relation between wear and elasto-hydrodyna ...

Programmed cell death plays a fundamental role in development and tissue homeostasis. Professional and non-professional phagocytes achieve the proper recognition, uptake, and degradation of apoptotic cells, a process called efferocytosis. Failure in effero ...

This work reports on the tribocorrosion properties of a CoCrMo alloy sliding under imposed passive potential against alumina in sulfuric acid-glycerol mixtures exhibiting different viscosities and thus, in principle, lubrication properties. As expected, we ...

Mechanical watches are complex and sensitive systems that have to maintain a faultless precision over their lifetime. However, this precision can be altered by disturbances occurring during the functioning time, such as friction, lubricant drying, or wear, ...

We report cryogenic vibrational spectra of gas-phase cations of two common hydroxycoumarins, scopoletin and esculetin, as well as their glycosidic derivatives, scopolin and esculin. The study allows direct observation of the intramolecular interactions bet ...

We present an analysis of the structure, kinematics, and orbit of a newly found stellar stream emanating from the globular cluster M92 (NGC 6341). This stream was discovered in an improved matched-filter map of the outer Galaxy, based on a "color-color-mag ...

Barium stars are thought to result from binary evolution in systems wide enough to allow the more massive component to reach the asymptotic giant branch and eventually become a CO white dwarf. While Ba stars were initially known only among giant or subgian ...

Self-lubricating, gold matrix composite coatings were produced by electrochemical codeposition of carbon nanocapsules filled with ionic liquid (IL) from a colloidal galvanic bath on a nickel electrode. The tribological response of the composite coatings wa ...

The spectroscopic and photometric signals of the star-to-star abundance variations found in globular clusters seem to be correlated with global parameters like the cluster's metallicity, mass, and age. Understanding this behaviour could bring us closer to ...

We investigate the role of dense megaparsec-scale environments in processing molecular gas of cluster galaxies as they fall into the cluster cores. We selected a sample of similar to 20 luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs) belonging to intermediate-redshift ...

This article proposes an original approach to urban events mapping. At the theoretical level, the article is based on rhythmanalysis and recent research on urban rhythms. It contrasts with previous research by departing from everyday rhythms to tackle the ...

We present results on the environmental dependence of the star-forming galaxy main sequence in 11 galaxy cluster fields at 1.0 < z < 1.5 from the Gemini Observations of Galaxies in Rich Early Environments Survey (GOGREEN) survey. We use a homogeneously sel ...

The development of homonuclear dipolar decoupling sequences to obtain high-resolution H-1 NMR spectra from solids has recently celebrated its 50th birthday. Over the years, a series of different decoupling schemes have been developed, starting with the pio ...

We study here experimentally, numerically and using a lubrication approach, the shape, velocity and lubrication film thickness distribution of a droplet rising in a vertical Hele-Shaw cell. The droplet is surrounded by a stationary immiscible fluid and mov ...

High-speed small-scale turbomachinery for waste heat recovery and vapor compression cycles is typically supported on gas-lubricated bearings operating close to the saturation conditions of the lubricant. Under particular conditions, the gas film might loca ...
