IntroductionThe current assessment and standardization of microsurgical skills are subjective, posing challenges in reliable skill evaluation. We aim to address these limitations by developing a quantitative and objective framework for accurately assessing ...

Modern power distribution systems are experiencing a large-scale integration of Converter-Interfaced Distributed Energy Resources (CIDERs). Their presence complicates the analysis and mitigation of harmonics, whose creation and propagation may be amplified ...

At the conceptual stage, building performance simulation (BPS) based evaluations are being increasingly used for tasks such as ranking of competing massing design proposals. However, such conceptual stage evaluations suffer from information deficiency in b ...

Homomorphic Encryption (HE) has become a wellknown tool for privacy-preserving recognition in biometric systems. Despite some important advantages of HE (such as preservation of recognition accuracy), there are two main drawbacks in the application of HE t ...

We propose a new modelling approach for daily activity scheduling which integrates the different daily scheduling choice dimensions (activity participation, location, schedule, duration and transportation mode) into a single optimisation problem. The funda ...

Programming languages and systems have failed to address the security implications of the increasingly frequent use of public libraries to construct modern software. Most languages provide tools and online repositories to publish, import, and use libraries ...

Although different vehicle sharing systems (VSSs) use different vehicle types, the management challenges and optimization problems to be solved are similar or even the same. This observation led us to create a generalized and holistic VSS management framew ...

Software network functions (NFs), such as a network address translator, load balancer, or proxy, promise to bring flexibility and rapid innovation to computer networks and to reduce operational costs. However, continuous updates and flexibility typically c ...

We design a consecution of protocols which allows organizations to have secure strong access control of their users to their desktop machines based on biometry. It provides both strong secure authentication and privacy. Moreover, our mechanism allows the s ...

Face recognition has evolved as a widely used biometric modality. However, its vulnerability against presentation attacks poses a significant security threat. Though presentation attack detection (PAD) methods try to address this issue, they often fail in ...

The extremely high recognition accuracy achieved by modern, convolutional neural network (CNN) based face recognition (FR) systems has contributed significantly to the adoption of such systems in a variety of applications, from mundane activities like unlo ...

Attacks against IoT systems are increasing at an alarming pace. Many IoT systems are and will be built using low-cost micro-controllers (IoT-pCs). Different security mechanisms have been proposed for IoT-mu Cs with different trade-offs. To guarantee a real ...

Program synthesis was first proposed a few decades ago, but in the last decade it has gained increased momentum in the research community. The increasing complexity of software has dictated the urgent need for improved supporting tools that verify the soft ...

Mountain regions are considered to be the natural "water towers" of the world due to their importance as sources of many rivers. Reliable tools to estimate the availability and variability of streamflows in such regions are still rare. In this context, the ...

The Web constitutes a valuable source of information. In recent years, it fostered the construction of large-scale knowledge bases, such as Freebase, YAGO, and DBpedia. The open nature of the Web, with content potentially being generated by everyone, howev ...

The transition towards more sustainable, fossil-free energy systems is interlinked with a high penetration of stochastic renewables, such as wind and solar. Integrating these new energy resources and technologies will lead to profound structural changes in ...

Unexpected disruptions occur for many reasons in railway networks and cause delays, cancellations, and, eventually, passenger inconvenience. This thesis focuses on the railway timetable rescheduling problem from a macroscopic point of view in case of lar ...

The most successful systems for "big data'' processing have all adopted functional APIs. We present a new programming model we call function passing designed to provide a more principled substrate, or middleware, upon which to build data-centric distribute ...

In this thesis, we present a novel generic and unifying framework for data-adaptive shape modeling. Our work is motivated by the raising need for powerful geometric modeling kernels that are required for shape characterization in biomedical imaging. The on ...
