In this thesis, we study the mechanics of tight physical knots. Knots are omnipresent in surgery, climbing, and sailing, with disastrous consequences when the filament or the rope fails to perform its function. Even if the importance of mechanical analysis ...

We perform a compare-and-contrast investigation between the equilibrium shapes of physical and ideal trefoil knots, both in closed and open configurations. Ideal knots are purely geometric abstractions for the tightest configuration tied in a perfectly fle ...

Semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are among the few photostable optical emitters that are ideal for sensing, imaging, drug delivery, and monitoring of protein activity. These applications often require strategies for immobilizing prote ...

Novel supramolecular gelators based on quinoline-indolin-2-one structure were synthesized. These gelators formed stable organogels in a mixture of DMSO/H2O (1:1). The scanning electron microscopy (SEM), IR and NMR spectroscopies, and rheological measuremen ...

The most basic function of synthetic microenvironments for tissue engineering is to act as a physical substrate for cell attachment, migration, and proliferation, similar to the natural cell environment. Functionalization of supramolecular materials with g ...

At low pH, underwater adherence between poly(N,N-dimethylacrylamide) hydrogels and poly(acrylic acid) brushes is due to the formation of multiple hydrogen bonds. The effect of the key parameters controlling the formation of these interactions (contact time ...

In this work, the antimicrobial effects of the photo-Fenton process on yeast cells were tested (Saccharomyces cerevisiae), an essential eukaryotic unicellular model of living cells. Near-neutral pH was used in all studies, while iron sulfate and iron citra ...

Proteomics has been one of the main projects challenging biological and analytical chemists for many years. The separation, identification and quantification of all the proteins expressed within biological systems remain the main objectives of proteomics. ...

A thermoresponsive organogel was obtained by orthogonal assembly of four compounds using dynamic covalent boronate ester and imine bonds, as well as dative boron-nitrogen bonds. It is shown that the gel state can be disrupted or reinforced by chemicals whi ...

Purification and desalting of protein and peptide samples by a three-well OFFGEL electrophoresis with immobilized ultra narrow pH gradient gels is proposed as a fast preparative strategy for proteomics. The gist of this strategy is to separate the proteins ...

Gel electrophoresis has been used for decades as a high-resolution separation technique for proteins and protein isomers, but limited in the coupling with MS because of low throughput and poor automaticity compared with LC-MS. In this work, we have develop ...

According to the World Health Organization worldwide obesity has more than doubled since 1980. The World health statistics 2012 report shows that one in six adults is obese, one in ten diabetic and one in three has a raised blood pressure. Overweight and o ...

Proteomic studies require analytical methods capable of separating, identifying and quantifying thousands of proteins. Consequently, developing separation methodologies with high resolving power necessary to separate complex protein samples prior to protei ...

The anticancer ruthenium-arene compd. [Ru(η6-C6H5CF3)(pta)Cl2] (pta = 1,3,5-triaza-7-phosphatricyclo[3.3.1.1]decane), termed RAPTA-CF3, with the electron-withdrawing α,α,α-trifluorotoluene ligand, is one of the most cytotoxic RAPTA compds. known. To ration ...

The growing demand of biopharmaceutical products is boosting the market for therapeutic recombinant proteins (r-proteins). More than half of the 140 r-proteins that have gained approval for human therapeutic use are manufactured in mammalian cells that mak ...

This thesis concerns optimal packing problems of tubes, or thick curves, where thickness is defined as follows. Three points on a closed space curve define a circle. Taking the infimum over all radii of pairwise-distinct point triples defines the thickness ...

We investigate numerical simulations and visualizations of the problem of tying a knot in a piece of rope. The goal is to use the least possible rope of a fixed, prescribed radius to tie a particular knot, e.g. a trefoil, a figure eight, and so on. The rop ...

We present a versatile scheme to rationally modulate the hydrolysis rate of ester bonds in hydrophilic polymer networks via adjacent charged amino acids. As soluble model systems, two cysteine-bearing oligopeptides containing either positively charged argi ...

[M(η6-arene)(ptn)Cl]X (M = Ru, Os; arene = p-cymene, benzene, toluene, hexamethylbenzene; ptn = 3,7-dimethyl-7-phospha-1,3,5-triazabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane; X = Cl-, BF4-) were prepd. and characterized spectroscopically. X-ray diffraction was addnl. used to ch ...

In the context of prefractionation methods for proteomics, this work deals mainly with the development of electrophoretic tools for isoelectric focusing of peptides and proteins for the analysis of biological mixtures. In the light of existing devices for ...
