The presence of impurity ions in magnetically confined plasmas can significantly influence micro-instabilities, impacting cross-field transport and ultimately affecting fusion performance. In particular, Parallel Velocity Gradient (PVG) instability, common ...

The primary bifurcation of the flow past three-dimensional axisymmetric bodies is investigated. We show that the azimuthal vorticity generated at the body surface is at the root of the instability, and that the mechanism proposed by Magnaudet & Mougin (200 ...

Shear instabilities can be the source of significant amounts of turbulent mixing in stellar radiative zones. Past attempts at modeling their effects (either theoretically or using numerical simulations) have focused on idealized geometries, where the shear ...

In the context of global gyrokinetic simulations of turbulence using a particle-in-cell framework, verifying the delta-f assumption with a fixed background distribution becomes challenging when determining quasi-steady state profiles corresponding to given ...

Non-Newtonian fluids are present in most manufacturing industry processes. Computa-tional models used to describe the rheological behavior of such materials can be costly due to the non-linear behavior of the viscosity. This work presents a parametrized pr ...

A new mixed-dimension coupling method is formulated for members with (bi-symmetric) wide flange cross sections based on the idea of least squares transformations between two sets of point clouds. This coupling method imposes the minimum number of constrain ...

We study the role of hydrodynamic instabilities in the morphogenesis of some typical karst draperies structures encountered in limestone caves. The problem is tackled using the long wave approximation for the fluid film that flows under an inclined substra ...

Penalty methods have proven to be particularly effective for achieving the required C-1-continuity in the context of multi patch isogeometric Kirchhoff-Love shells. Due to their conceptual simplicity, these algorithms are readily applicable to the displace ...

With a continuously growing share of non-dispatchable renewable energy sources in the power mix, flexibility in hydropower provision is becoming fundamental. The major role played by hydropower in frequency regulation in the last years has underlined the p ...

Formation of a microlayer in nucleate boiling results in substantial changes to the heat-transfer dynamics of the process, and establishing a criterion to distinguish between the microlayer and contact-line regimes encountered is necessary to obtain a quan ...

In this paper we analyze fast ion motion in the divertor tokamak test (DTT) device (Albanese et al 2017 Nucl. Fusion 57 016010). It is planned that DTT will be heated through a mix of 45 MW heating power, including 15 MW negative-ion-based neutral beam hea ...

The 2D delamination behavior of composite laminates under quasi-static out-of-plane opening loading has been experimentally investigated. A circular embedded pre-crack was introduced in the center and at the midplane of the laminates. To investigate the ef ...
