The unique catalytic activity of small nanoparticles can be attributed to their distinctive electronic structure and/or their ability to expose sites with a unique geometry. Quantifying and distinguishing the contributions of these effects to catalytic per ...

Light-matter-interaction is an intriguing research hotspot that covers the linear and nonlinear control of electromagnetic waves in various optical media. Since it is an immensely broad topic, our work focuses on the extra- and intra-cavity manipulation of ...

The electronic structure of metallic Bi2Ir2O7 has been investigated by a combination of soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy, x-ray emission spectroscopy (XES), and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) in the vicinity of the oxygen K edge. The O K-edge ...

In the realm of photoconversion of CO2 into high-value chemicals, the importance of near-infrared (NIR) light is gradually gaining recognition. Relative to ultraviolet (UV) and visible light, NIR light (700-2500 nm), accounting for ca. 50% of solar energy, ...

The epitaxial growth of complex oxides enables the production of high-quality films, yet substrate choice is restricted to certain symmetry and lattice parameters, thereby limiting the technological applications of epitaxial oxides. In comparison, the deve ...

Noble metals such as gold and silver have been used extensively for a range of plasmonic applications, including enhancing the fluorescence rate of a dye molecule, as evidenced by numerous experiments over the past two decades. Recently, a variety of doped ...

Cryo-electron microscopy with energy resolution, using the EELS-STEM method, allows researchers to identify the approximate locations of certain heavier atoms within single frozen, hydrated protein particles. ...

Complex oxides offer a wide range of functional properties, and recent advances in the fabrication of freestanding membranes of these oxides are adding new mechanical degrees of freedom to this already rich functional ecosystem. Here, photoactuation is dem ...

Frequency conversion in nonlinear materials is an extremely useful solution to the generation of new optical frequencies. Often, it is the only viable solution to realize light sources highly relevant for applications in science and industry. In particular ...

We report the resonantly enhanced radiative emission from a single SiGe quantum dot (QD), which is deterministically embedded into a bichromatic photonic crystal resonator (PhCR) at the position of its largest modal electric field by a scalable method. By ...

Hyperspectral imaging is an important asset of modern spectroscopy. It allows us to perform optical metrology at a high spatial resolution, for example in cathodoluminescence in scanning electron microscopy. However, hyperspectral datasets present added ch ...

In this work, we report on the effect of anodization time on the morphology, optical, and photocatalytic properties of TiO2 nanotubes (NTs) allowing bacterial inactivation and two organic pollutant degradation under low-intensity solar-simulated light. Sca ...

Silicon photonic circuits are rapidly growing in complexity and spreading to new applications. However, programmable circuits consume much power and require active electrical interfaces. For the first time, we demonstrate a nonvolatile photonic MEMS pi-pha ...

Spectral tunability methods used in optical communications and signal processing leveraging optical, electrical, and acousto-optic effects typically involve spectral truncation that results in energy loss. Here we demonstrate temperature tunable spectral b ...

Cells are attractive carriers for the transport and delivery of nanoparticulate cargo. The use of cell-based carriers allows one to enhance control over the biodistribution of drug-loaded polymers and polymer nanoparticles. One key element in the developme ...

Second-harmonic generation in nonlinear materials can be greatly enhanced by realizing doubly resonant cavities with high quality factors. However, fulfilling such doubly resonant condition in photonic crystal (PhC) slab cavities is a long-standing challen ...
