Significant shares of regional passenger railway still rely on pollutive diesel vehicles. Alstom, Bombardier, Siemens, and Stadler have reacted and recently announced Battery Electric and Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (BEVs and FCEVs). In this paper, we anal ...

The need for running complex Machine Learning (ML) algorithms, such as Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), in edge devices, which are highly constrained in terms of computing power and energy, makes it important to execute such applications efficiently. ...

Modern Hybrid Transactional/Analytical Processing (HTAP) systems use an integrated data processing engine that performs analytics on fresh data, which are ingested from a transactional engine. HTAP systems typically consider data freshness at design time, ...

This paper presents results on the impact of different tracks on the economic viability of track electrification for regional railway. Since regional railway still heavily relies on pollutive diesel propulsion systems, track electrification can be key to r ...

To confront the numerical results of Gamma(diff)with the analytical results from section 2.3, we originally considered the theoretical prediction for the diffusion rate given by eq. (2.17), which we re-wrote in eq. (4.25). ...

The growing trend of the cruise ship industry, together with increasing concerns over its impact on the environment, makes these ships a much relevant target for efforts toward increasing ship energy efficiency, thus ultimately reducing fuel consumption an ...

High-order numerical solvers for conservation laws suffer from Gibbs phenomenon close to discontinuities, leading to spurious oscillations and a detrimental effect on the solution accuracy. A possible strategy to reduce it comprises adding a suitable amoun ...

We report a small-angle neutron scattering study of the helical and skyrmion lattice order in single-crystal Cu2OSeO3 under quasihydrostatic helium gas pressures up to 5 kbar. By using helium gas as the pressure-transmitting medium (PTM) we ensure pressure ...

A moving mesh approach is employed to simulate two-phase flow with phase change. The mathematical model is based on the Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) description of the axisymmetric Navier-Stokes equations and energy conservation. These equations are ...

We provide detailed insight into the growth kinetics of intermetallic layers formed at the interface of molten Al-12%Si with cylindrical encapsulations of 316L stainless steel. This knowledge is relevant for the design and operation of high-temperature lat ...

Internal combustion engines are the most applied energy converters in passenger cars. In order to increase their efficiency, energy integration techniques are used to recover waste heat. An adapted methodology is required to design the organic Rankine cycl ...

Experimentally, it is observed that Toroidal Alfven Eigenmodes (TAEs) are difficult to excite with an external antenna when the plasma is in X-point geometry. Here, the effect of the X-point geometry on the efficiency of the TAE excitation with the externa ...

This paper describes a new numerical method for the simulation of phase change phenomena between a liquid and a vapour in the presence of non-condensable gases. The method is based on an interface-tracking approach in the framework of single-fluid modellin ...

One-way electric vehicle carsharing systems are receiving increasing attention due to their mobility, environmental, and societal benefits. One of the major issues faced by the operators of these systems is the optimization of the relocation operations of ...

The internal combustion engines are the most applied energy converters in the passenger cars. In order to increase their efficiency, energy integration techniques are used to recover the waste heat. An adapted methodology is required to design the ORC as a ...

Solidification is a phase transformation of utmost importance in material science, for it largely controls materials' microstructure on which a wide range of mechanical properties depends. Almost every human artifact undergoes a transformation that leads t ...

In the decommissioning of damaged Fukushima Daiichi reactors, the melted and re-solidified fuel debris in the bottom of the reactor pressure vessel and primary containment vessel need to be cut into small pieces before removing them from reactor buildings. ...

In this work, a level-set based finite element method was used to numerically evaluate the mechanical behavior in a small deformation range of semi-solid materials with different microstructure configurations. For this purpose, a finite element model of th ...
