The glass industry faces critical decarbonisation challenges due to high energy demand and reliance on fossil fuels. This study presents a comprehensive techno-economic analysis of diverse decarbonisation pathways for flat glass production, including elect ...

Social tipping dynamics illustrate how minor interventions can catalyse non-linear changes in energy transitions. Despite their importance, the feedback loops driving these dynamics are often analysed in isolation and predominantly qualitatively. This stud ...

The Energy Return On Investment (EROI) is a recognised indicator for assessing the relevance of an energy project in terms of net energy delivered to society. For woody biomass divergences remain on the right methodology to assess the EROI leading to large ...

The large-scale production of platform chemicals from biomass requires efficient, cost-effective, and sustainable methods. Here, we present three one-pot synthesis routes for producing diformylxylose (DFX), a sugar-based solvent and platform chemical, usin ...

Liquid fuel production from biomass-derived molecules has received great attention due to the diminished fossil fuel reserves, growing energy demand, and the necessity of CO2 emission reduction. The deoxygenation of oils and fatty acids is a promising proc ...

The amphiphilic chemical structure of native lignin, composed by a hydrophobic aromatic core and hydrophilic hydroxy groups, makes it a promising alternative for the development of bio-based surface-active compounds. However, the severe conditions traditio ...

In energy policy, efficiency improvements are conventional means for reducing industrial energy use as well as related environmental and climate externalities. Unfortunately, the effectiveness of energy efficiency improvements in reducing energy use is kno ...

Metallic electrodes based on iron, nickel, and/or cobalt have re-emerged as promising cost-effective anodes for the alkaline oxygen evolution reaction (OER) due to their simplicity and their in situ formation of a highly active oxy-hydroxide surface cataly ...

Target values for creating carbon budgets for buildings are important for developing climateneutral building stocks. A lack of clarity currently exists for defining carbon budgets for buildings and what constitutes a unit of assessment-particularly the dis ...

The structural integrity of the reactor pressure vessel (RPV) of light water reactors (LWR) is of utmost importance regarding operation safety and lifetime. High-temperature water (HTW) and hydrogen absorbed from environment, in synergy with irradiation em ...
