Porous carbonaceous preforms, made from graphite and silicon carbide (SiC) powders, with varying graphite powder mass fractions and particle sizes, were infiltrated at 1500 degrees C and 1700 degrees C by Si-8 at. pct Zr alloy to produce dense Si-Zr-SiC co ...

This study investigated the origin of the enhanced pseudo-elasticity of additively manufactured vanadium carbide-containing Fe-based shape memory alloys. The aged samples with two different starting microstructures, as-built and solution-treated, showed co ...

Mo-Ti alloys form solid solutions over a wide range of compositions, with lattice misfit parameters increasing significantly with titanium content. This indicates a strong increase in the critical stress for edge dislocation motion. Here, we probe the tran ...

The aluminium remelting industry relies on natural gas to transform recycled aluminium into aluminium feedstock, entailing significant atmospheric emissions. Hydric resources are also affected as they are used as sinks of waste heat from the casting proces ...

Diffusion is one of the most important phenomena studied in science ranging from physics to biology and, in abstract form, even in social sciences. In the field of materials science, diffusion in crystalline solids is of particular interest as it plays a p ...

Successful application of diffusion chronometry is based on detailed knowledge of diffusion parameters obtained from laboratory experiments, which also need to be upscaled to be applied to natural samples. While generally applicable, several examples of di ...

Thin-ply composites, obtained with recently developed fiber spreading techniques, rapidly gained industrial interest because they offer a large composite design freedom, and lead to a composite tensile strength that is close to that of the individual fiber ...

A microcasting process is used to produce high aspect ratio ( > 30) monocrystalline pure aluminium wires with a diameter between 14 and 115 mu m. The role of thermal activation in the plastic deformation of these microwires is measured by means of (single) ...

In this work, the mechanisms leading to the pore closure in reactive melt infiltration (RMI) of carbon by pure silicon and a near eutectic Si-8 at-pct Zr alloy at 1500 and 1700 degrees C under vacuum were studied. Various geometrical configurations of micr ...

Uncontrollable zinc dendrite growth and parasitic reactions have greatly hindered the development of high energy and long life rechargeable aqueous zinc-ion batteries. Herein, the synergic effect of a bifunctional lignin-containing cellulose nanofiber (LCN ...

Ratchet transport systems are widespread in physics and biology; however, the effect of the dispersing medium in the collective dynamics of these out-of-equilibrium systems has been often overlooked. We show that, in a traveling wave magnetic ratchet, long ...

The work needed to mechanically drive molten metal into a porous solid preform when producing a composite material by infiltration can significantly exceed the energy change required for thermodynamically reversible infiltration. We measure, by quantitativ ...

In this article, the Joule effect heating influence on recrystallization phenomena in the Inconel 718 nickel-based superalloy is investigated in details. On the one hand, static recrystallization kinetic studies at 1020 degrees C after cold deformation up ...

Tuning the mechanical properties of metals, including strength, through adjusting the type and/or concentration of added solute elements, has been recognized as an effective way to design and produce materials with desired or optimized mechanical propertie ...

Laser surface remelting at various velocities has been employed to study the selection of microstructures of high-purity Fe-C-Si alloys containing nominally 3.2 to 4.2 wt.% C and 1 to 3 wt.% Si. The microstructure of the remelted region consisted of metast ...

Permeability of fibrous microstructures is a key material property for predicting the mold fill times and resin flow path during composite manufacturing. In this work, we report an efficient approach to predict the permeability of 3D microstructures from d ...

Two new ferrito-martensitic oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) steels reinforced with (Y, Ti, O) nanoparticles were elaborated using a high-energy attritor. The milled powder was consolidated by hot extrusion at 1050 degrees C. The two types of ODS steels ...

Electrochemical CO2 reduction (eCO2RR) towards value-added chemicals, powered by renewable electricity, is a promising technology for storing the intermittent renewable energy in the form of chemical bonds. Among the various products of eCO2RR, multi-carbo ...

The microstructural evolution of the two austenitic alloys Fe-20Mn-3Al-0.7C wt pct and Fe-20Mn-6Al-0.7C wt pct when different thermal and thermomechanical treatments are performed has been studied. To this end, a generic industrial die of 100 ton capacity ...

Polymer-derived ceramics (PDCs) exhibit excellent properties and are compatible with many shaping techniques due to the liquid character of the preceramic polymers (PCPs). Furthermore, their properties are adjustable by modifying the precursor composition ...
