Decentralized storage networks offer services with intriguing possibilities to reduce inequalities in an extremely centralized market. Fair distribution of rewards, however, is still a persistent problem in the current generation of decentralized applicati ...

Mapping the technology landscape is crucial for market actors to take informed investment decisions. However, given the large amount of data on the Web and its subsequent information overload, manually retrieving information is a seemingly ineffective and ...

Peer-to-peer (P2P) sharing may foster sustainability synergistically by saving resources, reducing costs and promoting satisfaction of consumer needs and social connectivity. A survey of Swiss and Swedish consumers (N = 1522) was conducted to analyze drive ...

Image-based retrieval in large Earth observation archives is difficult, because one needs to navigate across thousands of candidate matches only with the proposition image as a guide. By using text as a query language, the retrieval system gains in usabili ...

Information retrieval (IR) systems such as search engines are important for people to find what they need among the tremendous amount of data available in their organization or on the Internet. These IR systems enable users to search in a large data collec ...

Peer-to-peer (p2p) networks are not independent of their peers, and the network efficiency depends on peers contributing resources. Because shared resources are not free, this contribution must be rewarded. Peers across the network may share computation po ...

Internet blackouts are challenging environments for anonymity and censorship resistance. Existing popular anonymity networks (e.g., Freenet, I2P, Tor) rely on Internet connectivity to function, making them impracticable during such blackouts. In such a set ...

Internet ranking algorithms play a crucial role in information technologies and numerical analysis due to their efficiency in high dimensions and wide range of possible applications, including scientometrics and systemic risk in finance (SinkRank, DebtRank ...

We study the query-based attack against image retrieval to evaluate its robustness against adversarial examples under the black-box setting, where the adversary only has query access to the top-1 ranked unlabeled images from the database. Compared with que ...

With the current exponential growth of video-based social networks, video retrieval using natural language is receiving ever-increasing attention. Most existing approaches tackle this task by extracting individual frame-level spatial features to represent ...

We present new techniques to analyze natural local search algorithms for several variants of the max-sum diversification problem which, in its most basic form, is as follows: given an n-point set X subset of R-d and an integer k, select k points in X so th ...

Large commercial latency-sensitive services, such as web search, run on dedicated clusters provisioned for peak load to ensure responsiveness and tolerate data center outages. As a result, the average load is far lower than the peak load used for provision ...

We present an iterative retrieval algorithm based on data constraint for ultrashort pulse characterization using dispersion scan (d-scan). The proposed algorithm is much faster and leads to a drastic reduction of retrieval times, but, compared to the stand ...

Content-based image retrieval aims at substituting traditional indexing based on manual annotation by using automatically-extracted visual indexing features. Novel techniques are needed however to efficiently deal with the semantic gap (i.e. the partial ma ...

Popular anonymity mechanisms such as Tor provide low communication latency but are vulnerable to traffic analysis attacks that can de-anonymize users. Moreover, known traffic-analysis-resistant techniques such as Dissent are impractical for use in latency- ...

People are surrounded by an unprecedented wealth of information. Access to it depends on the availability of suitable search engines, but even when these are available, people often do not initiate a search, because their current activity does not allow th ...

The advent of the Web reshaped the way in which humans memorize information, arguably unlike any other technological advance of the last decades. Rather than remembering the information itself, people are primed to find the needed information through Web s ...

Retrieval of bio/geophysical variables from remote sensing imagery is an important research field. Due to the development and availability of different EO satellites, especially the ones with hyperspectral sensors, the combined use of radar and optical ima ...

Background: Wikipedia, the world's largest and most popular encyclopedia is an indispensable source of chemistry information. It contains among others also entries for over 15,000 chemicals including metabolites, drugs, agrochemicals and industrial chemica ...
