Activity-based models offer the potential for a far deeper understanding of daily mobility behaviour than trip-based models. Based on the fundamental assumption that travel demand is derived from the need to do activities, they are flexible tools that aim ...

Human babies have a natural desire to interact with new toys and objects, through which they learn how the world around them works, e.g., that glass shatters when dropped, but a rubber ball does not. When their predictions are proven incorrect, such as whe ...

This chapter explores touristic infrastructures as politics of ambiance, paying attention to the way they enable urban environment and engage pedestrians to experience cities critically. This issue will be documented through an ethnographic study of two to ...

One significant and simultaneously interesting problem in urban mobility has to do with the study of shared spaces where various categories of users coexist and act together. This paper aims to examine the behavior and preferences of pedestrians and cyclis ...

Various interactions, time arrangements, and constraints exist for individuals scheduling their day as a member of a household, which affect their in-home as well as out-of-home activity schedule. However, the existing activity-based models are mostly base ...

The thesis at hand is concerned with robots' navigation in human crowds. Specifically, methods are developed for planning a mobile robot's local motion between pedestrians, and they are evaluated in experiments where a robot interacts with real pedestrians ...

Background:Short-term forecasts of infectious disease burden can contribute to situational awareness and aid capacity planning. Based on best practice in other fields and recent insights in infectious disease epidemiology, one can maximise the predictive p ...

Moving walkways are pedestrian dedicated hardware which generally decrease pedestrian travel time. We propose the utilization of these devices to dynamically control pedestrian flows in order to improve pedestrian dynamics. Three variations of a control st ...

Forecasting pedestrians' future motions is essential for autonomous driving systems to safely navigate in urban areas. However, existing prediction algorithms often overly rely on past observed trajectories and tend to fail around abrupt dynamic changes, s ...

Autonomous mobility devices such as transport, cleaning, and delivery robots, hold a massive economic and social benefit. However, their deployment should not endanger bystanders, particularly vulnerable populations such as children and older adults who ar ...

Pedestrians, like drivers, generally dislike congestion. This is true for most pedestrian environments: trains stations, airports, or shopping malls. Furthermore, pedestrian congestion also influences the attractiveness of public transportation networks. T ...

This paper describes a novel method for non-holonomic robots of convex shape to avoid imminent collisions with moving obstacles. The method's purpose is to assist navigation in crowds by correcting steering from the robot's path planner or driver. We evalu ...

Soon human-robot interactions in pedestrian areas will be beyond the novelty effect with the deployment of delivery robots, autonomous personal mobility vehicles, and surveillance robots. Proxemics and other social rules guide these interactions, nonethele ...

Exploiting the full potential of pedestrian infrastructure is becoming critical in many environments which cannot be easily expanded to cope with the increasing pedestrian demand. This is particularly true for train stations as in many dense cities space i ...

The modeling of walking behavior and design of walk-friendly urban pathways have been of interest to many researchers over the past decades. One of the major issues in pedestrian modeling is path planning decision-making in a dynamic walking environment wi ...

Pedestrian mobility is at the center of urban transportation systems. Therefore, understanding it is a necessary task to improve the mobility in cities. However, pedestrian mobility is extremely complex, and advance methods are needed to capture its dynami ...

Driving is a very challenging task to automatize despite how naturally and efficiently it may come to experienced human drivers. The complexity stems from the need to (i) understand the surrounding context and forecast how it is likely to evolve, (ii) plan ...

In developed countries, the management of existing civil infrastructure is challenging due to evolving functional requirements, aging and climate change. Due to conservative approaches in construction design and practice, infrastructure often has hidden re ...

Exploiting the full potential of pedestrian infrastructures is becoming vital in many environments which cannot be easily expanded to cope with the increasing demand. This is particularly true of train stations in many dense cities since space is limited. ...

We introduce a probabilistic modeling approach for pedestrian speed density relationship. It is motivated by a high scatter in real data that precludes the use of traditional equilibrium relationships. To characterize the observed pattern, we relax the hom ...
