Situational awareness strategies are essential for the reliable and secure operation of the electric power grid which represents critical infrastructure in modern society. With the rise of converter-interfaced renewable generation and the consequent shift ...

Electronic devices play an irreplaceable role in our lives. With the tightening time to market, exploding demand for computing power, and continuous desire for smaller, faster, less energy-consuming, and lower-cost chips, computer-aided design for electron ...

Driven by the demand for real-time processing and the need to minimize latency in AI algorithms, edge computing has experienced remarkable progress. Decision-making AI applications stand out for their heavy reliance on data-centric operations, predominantl ...

Modern power distribution systems are experiencing a large-scale integration of Converter-Interfaced Distributed Energy Resources (CIDERs). Their presence complicates the analysis and mitigation of harmonics, whose creation and propagation may be amplified ...

The pervasive adoption of field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) in both cyber-physical systems and the cloud has raised many security issues. Being integrated circuits, FPGAs are susceptible to fault and power side-channel attacks, which require physical ...

With Moore's law coming to an end, increasingly more hope is being put in specialized hardware implemented on reconfigurable architectures such as Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs). Yet, it is often neglected that these architectures themselves experi ...

When spatially shared among multiple tenants, field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) are vulnerable to remote power side-channel analysis attacks. Using carefully crafted on-chip voltage sensors, adversaries can extract secrets (e.g., encryption keys or th ...

The miniaturization of integrated circuits (ICs) and their higher performance and energy efficiency, combined with new machine learning algorithms and applications, have paved the way to intelligent, interconnected edge devices. In the medical domain, they ...

Field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) have become critical components in many cloud computing platforms. These devices possess the fine-grained parallelism and specialization needed to accelerate applications ranging from machine learning to networking an ...

Recently, we published an article [1] presenting how the Power Electronics course at the bachelor level is organized by the Power Electronics Laboratory and taught at Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, EPFL, Switzerland. For those avid readers who m ...

To answer the growing demand for hardware acceleration, Amazon, Microsoft, and many other major cloud service providers have included field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) in their datacenters. However, researchers have shown that cloud FPGAs, when shared ...

Embedded systems confront two opposite goals: low-power operation and high performance. The current trend to reach these goals is toward heterogeneous platforms, including multi-core architectures with heterogeneous cores and hardware accelerators. The lat ...

Frequency-bin qubits get the best of time-bin and dual-rail encodings, but require external modulators and pulse shapers to build arbitrary states. Here, instead, the authors work directly on-chip by controlling the interference of biphoton amplitudes gene ...

The demise of Moore's Law and Dennard scaling has resulted in diminishing performance gains for general-purpose processors, and so has prompted a surge in academic and commercial interest for hardware accelerators. Specialized hardware has already redefine ...

Counting single photons and measuring their arrival time is of crucial importance for imaging and quantum applications that use single photons to outperform classical techniques. The investigation of the coincidence, i.e. correlation, between photons can b ...

Field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) combine hardware reconfigurability with a high degree of parallelism. Consequently, FPGAs offer performance gains and power savings for many applications. A recent trend has been to leverage the hardware versatility o ...

Time-synchronization attacks on phasor measurement units (PMUs) pose a real threat to smart grids; it was shown that they are feasible in practice and that they can have a nonnegligible negative impact on state estimation, without triggering the bad data d ...

Edge-computing requires high-performance energy-efficient embedded systems. Fixed-function or custom accelerators, such as FFT or FIR filter engines, are very efficient at implementing a particular functionality for a given set of constraints. However, the ...

Since their inception more than thirty years ago, field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) have been widely used to implement a myriad of applications from different domains. As a result of their low-level hardware reconfigurability, FPGAs have much faster d ...

The research community has been making significant progress in hardware implementation, numerical computing and algorithm development for optimization-based control. However, there are two key challenges that still have to be overcome for optimization-base ...
