Static axial induction control and tilt control are two strategies that have the potential to increase power production in wind farms, mitigating wake effects and increasing the available power for downstream turbines. In this study, wind tunnel experiment ...

In this thesis, we explored the effect of certain terrain-induced flow phenomena on the development of wind turbines sited in complex terrain. A combined experimental and analytical approach is used to study wind turbine wakes in different types of complex ...

Hydropower has a long tradition in Europe and contributed significantly during the last century to industrial development and welfare in most of the countries in Europe. The ambitious plan for an energy transition in Europe now seeks to achieve a lowcarbon ...

Wind energy potential in complex terrain is still poorly understood and difficult to quantify. With Switzerland’s current efforts to shift to renewable energy resources, it is now becoming even more crucial to investigate the hidden potential of wind energ ...

In this thesis, we explore the best practice of simulating the wakes of the turbines under active yaw control (AYC) using large-eddy simulation (LES). In the first study, we validate the blade-element actuator disk model (ADM-BE) for a yawed wind turbine. ...

The process synthesis and optimization methods used in this work include simulation of biomass gasification, hydrogen and synthetic natural gas production, and jet fuel production via a Fisher Tropsch unit. An energy integration approach, carried out by th ...

The depletion of fossil fuel sources has encouraged the authorities to use renewable resources such as wind energy to generate electricity. A backup/storage system can improve the performance of wind turbines, due to fluctuations in power demand. The novel ...

Over the past two decades, the thermo-hydro-mechanical behavior of earth-contact structures such as piles, walls, slabs, and tunnels, which simultaneously provide structural support and energy supply, has been studied through various field experiments and ...

According to the International Energy Agency, the global net-zero emissions objective requires the installed wind power capacity to increase 11-fold between 2020 and 2050. The scientific community has recently voiced concerns about the logistic feasibility ...

In this study, wind-tunnel experiments are used to investigate cyclic yaw control as a wake mitigation strategy aiming to improve wind farm power production. The control strategy is applied to a single wind turbine and a wind farm comprising of a column of ...

Large Eddy Simulations (LES) of atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) flow with the actuator disc (AD) for turbine modelling is a widely used method of simulating wind farm flows. Hence, it is important to understand the requirements for achieving a good compar ...

Vertical-axis wind turbines are excellent candidates to diversify wind energy technology, but their aerodynamic complexity limits industrial deployment. To improve the efficiency and lifespan of vertical-axis wind turbines, we desire data-driven models and ...

This study validates large-eddy simulation (LES) for predicting the flow through a wind turbine array subjected to active yaw control. The wind turbine array consists of three miniature wind turbines operated in both non-yawed and yawed configurations unde ...

Energy balance in a power system must be maintained at all times, regardless of the variations in generation and consumption. Large Pumped Hydro Storage Plants (PHSPs) are introduced to the power system to accumulate the excess of energy during the low dem ...

To achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement on climate change, governments around the world must shift to renewable energy (RE) to drastically reduce their CO2 emissions within the next 10-30 years. The development of effective strategies for RE integratio ...

The electrification of private mobility is becoming a popular solution to reduce the reliance on fossil fuels. However, uncontrollable charging of a large electric vehicle fleet challenges the distribution grid due to transmission bottlenecks, voltage limi ...

The energy transition towards a carbon-neutral and sustainable economy is one of the greatest challenges of the 21st century to combat global warming and pollution. The decarbonization process is affecting every sector of the economy (electricity, transpor ...

Analytical wind turbine wake models are widely used to predict the wake velocity deficit. In these models, the wake growth rate is a key parameter specified mainly with empirical formulations. In this study, a new physics-based model is proposed and valida ...

In the first part of this thesis, the comparison of two families of CORDEX suggests the improved performance of the latest version in reproducing the local climate. The results indicate increasing future trends for annual wind speeds in the north-west (+0. ...

In this study, the wake behind a wind turbine located on an escarpment is investigated using particle-image velocimetry in a wind tunnel. Five different escarpment models are used, which vary in the windward side shape from forward facing steps (FFS) with ...
