In this thesis, we present a theory of value for the design and analysis of service ecosystems. The theory is based on general systems thinking. The concept of a system is used for relating knowledge from different disciplines (such as software engineering ...

At the beginning of the 19th century, the Napoleonic administration introduced a new standardised description system to give an objective account of the form and functions of the city of Venice. The cadastre, deployed on a European scale, was offering for ...

In this thesis, we contribute to the field of rehabilitation robotics by designing haptic-enabled tangible robot-based activities and exploring their added value for therapy and assistance. The research specifically focuses on the design and development of ...

This paper presents an overview of the first edition of HIPE (Identifying Historical People, Places and other Entities), a pioneering shared task dedicated to the evaluation of named entity processing on historical newspapers in French, German and English. ...

Independent modeling of various modules of an information system (IS), and consequently database subschemas, may result in formal or semantic conflicts between the modules being modeled. Such conflicts may cause collisions between the integrated database s ...

We present the outcomes of the Linked Books project, resulting in a prototype citation index interlinking the Italian national library catalog (Opac SBN) with the information system of the State Archive of Venice and international authority records or “met ...

This article presents a fully automatic pipeline to transform the Napoleonic Cadastres into an information system. The cadastres established during the first years of the 19th century cover a large part of Europe. For many cities they give one of the first ...

Toward industry 4.0, modern manufacturing companies are aiming at building digital twins to manage physical assets, processes, people, and places. Since in this environment, massive amounts of data have been generated and collected, integration and managem ...

In Switzerland, Germany and Austria, as in many European countries, the transition of the energy sector towards more sustainability is a long-term transition process, unfolding since decades. It however only reached the regime level in recent years and the ...

This report presents the implementation of a communication interface to bridge the gap between the semantic 3D city models of the Geographical information system (GIS) database and the scenarios creation environment for decision‐making in the conceptual ph ...

Scholarly affinities are one of the most fundamental hidden dynamics that drive scientific development. Some affinities are actual, and consequently can be measured through classical academic metrics such as co-authoring. Other affinities are potential, an ...

In the present information era, a huge amount of machine-readable data is available regarding scientific publications. Such unprecedented wealth of data offers the opportunity to investigate science itself as a complex interacting system by means of quanti ...

Automatically extracting information from social media is challenging given that social content is often noisy, ambiguous, and inconsistent. However, as many stories break on social channels first before being picked up by mainstream media, developing meth ...

Co-location information about users is increasingly available online. For instance, mobile users more and more frequently report their co-locations with other users in the messages and in the pictures they post on social networking websites by tagging the ...

As business conditions change rapidly, the need for integrating business and technical systems calls for novel ICT frameworks and solutions to remain concurrent in highly competitive markets. A number of problems and issues arise in this regard. In this pa ...

In the last decade, online social networks have enabled people to interact in many ways with each other and with content. The digital traces of such actions reveal people's preferences towards online content such as news or products. These traces often res ...

The advent of the Web reshaped the way in which humans memorize information, arguably unlike any other technological advance of the last decades. Rather than remembering the information itself, people are primed to find the needed information through Web s ...

The physical or engineering assets within modern industries have consistently been considered as the core elements of significant value that constitute the backbone for success and overall growth. Ensuring the optimal performance of an asset is a crucial a ...

Target identification for tractography studies requires solid anatomical knowledge validated by an extensive literature review across species for each seed structure to be studied. Manual literature review to identify targets for a given seed region is ted ...

In neuroscience, as in many other scientific domains, the primary form of knowledge dissemination is through published articles. One challenge for modern neuroinformatics is finding methods to make the knowledge from the tremendous backlog of publications ...
