This paper presents a comprehensive evaluation and comparison of two isolated unidirectional DC/DC converter topologies – the single-phase Phase-Shifted Full Bridge converter (PSFB) and the three-phase DC/DC converter (3-ph DC/DC), for high-power applications such as MVDC collection grids. The operating principles and key differences between the two converters are presented in detail. Imposing identical technical specifications, the two converters are optimized separately, considering the performance of the

Without loss of generality, the return stroke can be treated as a current pulse propagating along the leader channel while undergoing attenuation and dispersion. According to the measurements, the return stroke travels along the leader channel with a speed less than the speed of light. However, if the return stroke speed were to be lower than the speed of light, the propagating return stroke would generate an electric field traveling ahead of the return stroke front with the speed of light. Since the leader

This study examines lightning activity from 2012 to 2023 around tall structures situated across diverse geographic settings based on data from the World Wide Lightning Location Network (WWLLN), with the aim of providing a global perspective on lightning incidence in their vicinity. Lightning stroke density was calculated within a 2 km radius of each structure and compared with that in a surrounding annular region extending from 2 to 10 km, enabling the identification of potential local enhancements in light

Solid-state transformers (SSTs) demonstrate significant potential for hybrid power conversion systems requiring medium-voltage (MV) and low-voltage (LV) DC interfaces to a MVAC grid. The modular bridge rectifier (mBR) topology represents an emerging single-stage SST implementation, featuring just one diode and isolated DC/DC converter per submodule to achieve superior power density and modularity. This paper presents the first comprehensive exploration of mBR’s multi-port functionality for MVAC/MVDC/LVDC po

The problem of optimal control of power distribution systems is becoming increasingly compelling due to the progressive penetration of distributed energy resources in this specific layer of the electrical infrastructure. Distribution systems are, indeed, experiencing significant changes in terms of operation philosophies that are often based on optimal control strategies relying on the computation of linearized dependencies between controlled (e.g. voltages) and control variables (e.g. power injections). As

For the case of urban overhead lines, the presence of nearby buildings is expected to affect the overvoltages induced by nearby lightning return strokes. This effect until now has been seldom taken into account in the literature on the subject. The paper presents a 3D FEM model that calculates the lightning electromagnetic pulse (LEMP) taking into account the presence of building placed in proximity of the LEMP-coupled overhead line. As a first approximation, the building surfaces are assumed as perfect con

In this paper we report the fabrication and detailed electrical characterization of a Metal-Ferroelectric-Oxide-Semiconductor Capacitor aiming at the extraction of the polarization characteristic. In order to evaluate the electrical performances of the ferroelectric over SiO2 capacitor, we propose a simple device test structure featuring an intermediate contact between the two insulators. The investigated test structures are fabricated on highly doped silicon with a gate stack including 40nm silicon dioxide

In this work, a detailed analysis of capacitance behavior of high voltage MOSFET (HV-MOS) e.g. LDMOS, VDMOS using device simulation is made. The impact of lateral non-uniform doping and drift region is separately analyzed. It is shown that the peaks in C-GD and C-GS capacitances of HV-MOS originate from lateral non-uniform doping. The drift region decreases the C-GD capacitance and increases the peaks in CGS and also gives rise to peaks in C-GG capacitances increasing with higher drain bias. It is also show

The paper illustrates a procedure based on the continuous-wavelet transform (CWT) for the analysis of voltage transients due to line faults, and discusses its application to fault location in power distribution systems. The analysis carried out shows that correlation exists between typical frequencies of the CWT-transformed signals and specific paths in the network covered by the traveling waves originated by the fault. The paper presents a procedure for determining fault location in MV distribution systems

In this paper, we investigate the effect of periodically-grounded shielding wires and surge arresters on the attenuation of lightning-induced voltages. We discuss the adequacy of the commonly made simplification of assuming the shielding wire at ground potential, instead of being treated as one of the conductors of the multiconductor system. We also compare then the mitigation effect of shielding wires with that achievable by the insertion of surge arresters along the line. The computation results are first

Recent power quality studies have been focused on the source-identification of voltage disturbances at distribution network busses. This paper describes a method aimed at correlating indirect-lightning events with power systems relay operations, associated with voltage dips. The proposed method, based on the coordinated use of the Italian lightning location system CESI-SIRF, the Italian monitoring system of protection manoeuvres CESI-SAM, and the availability of an advanced simulation tool for the accurate

In the framework of the conductor optimisation task (CONDOPT) five NbTi subsize cable-in-conduit conductors with parametric variations were fabricated. The DC performance of these conductors tested in the SULTAN test facility [IEEE Trans. Appl. Supercond. 12 (2002) 520] and the strand properties including the voltage-current characteristic, are compared. The results clearly indicate that the current carrying capacity of the conductors is considerably reduced due to the self-field. In conductors with a hinde

We discuss in this paper the influence of the height of an elevated strike object on the magnitude of lightning radiated electric and magnetic fields. For the analysis, the transmission line (TL) return stroke model for the lightning channel is adopted and the strike object is represented by a uniform lossless transmission line. Analytical expressions derived recently by the authors for the radiated electric and magnetic fields are used to investigate the influence of the height of the elevated strike objec

Since 1991, a broadband, high-resolution current measurement system has captured the lightning current derivative at the Toronto CN Tower. In this paper, extensive statistics (1992-2001) of CN Tower lightning current waveform parameters (maximum steepness and peak) are compared with waveform parameters of currents recorded at other elevated objects, including rockets trailing conducting wires. The influence of the height of the struck object on waveform parameters is analyzed. The paper focuses on the compa

This thesis aims at developing wireless systems with a strong emphasis on low-power consumption and low-voltage operation. The main technical objective is the development of a single cells battery operated fully integrated CMOS RF transceiver that fulfills the main common requirements of low bit rate (typically a few 20 kbits/s) distributed wireless remote sensing Microsystems. The radio link should be bi-directional (half-duplex), work on small distances (maximum 100 m) and operate in the 434 MHz ISM band.

This paper examines the responses of four different types of shielded conduits to a direct lightning strike. The conduits are buried in the ground and run between two shielded enclosures, one of which is struck by lightning. An induced current flows on the conduit and this induces a voltage on the inner wires within the shield. Using a simple resistive model, this voltage is estimated and the effectiveness of the shielding provided by the various conduits is determined. A key element in the calculations is

The voltages induced by nearby lightning strikes are a major cause of outages in power distribution systems. We compute such voltages taking into account the effects of the dart leaders that precede subsequent return strokes in both natural and rocket-triggered discharges. The results show that for stroke locations that are approximately alone, the line prolongation, the leader electric field change has a significant influence on the amplitude and shape of the induced voltages. The taking into account of th

We give topological criteria for the convexity and the concavity of a current or a voltage in a resistive circuit, as a function of a source voltage or current, when the nonlinear resistor characteristics are all either convex or concave. When the criteria are satisfied, all circuits with the same structure will have a convex, or all will have a concave transfer characteristic. The application of the criterion to ladder circuits leads to explicit and easily verifyable conditions.

A model for the calculation of lightning-induced voltages is presented allowing the assessment of the effect of corona when power distribution lines are illuminated by lightning electromagnetic fields. It is shown that, as far as corona can be described by means of an increase of capacitance after the voltage has reached a threshold value, corona can produce an increase in the peak amplitude of the induced voltage. An explanation of this result is given. The need for experimental results to test this theore

The paper presents a modelling procedure for evaluating the voltages and currents induced on transmission lines by nearby lightning. Models are needed in order to evaluate lightning effects where experimental results are not available. These models allow better design and coordination of the protection of power and telecommunication networks against lightning induced effects
