Snowfall is an essential component of the hydrological cycle, as it is involved in most precipitation on Earth, either directly as snow falling to the ground or indirectly as rain melted from snow. At the same time, the ice phase of clouds and precipitatio ...

The use of meteorological radars to study snowfall microphysical properties and processes is well established, in particular via a few distinct techniques: the use of radar polarimetry, of multi-frequency radar measurements, and of the radar Doppler spectr ...

SPIDER is the 100 keV full-size Negative Ion Source prototype of the ITER Neutral Beam Injector, operating at Consorzio RFX in Padova, Italy. The largest Negative Ion Source in the world, SPIDER generates an RF driven plasma from which Deuterium or Hydroge ...

The datasets presented in this article were collected during a four-months measurement campaign at the Belgian research base Princess Elisabeth Antarctica (PEA). The campaign, named PEA Orographic Precipitation Experiment (POPE), was conducted by the Envir ...

Wind transport alters the snow topography and microstructure on sea ice through snow redistribution controlled by deposition and erosion. The impact of these processes on radar signatures is poorly understood. Here, we examine the effects of snow redistrib ...

This work presents the initial studies on the requirements for the design of 3D coils on EU-DEMO. The use of 3D coils in present machines includes two main purposes: the first one is the Error Field Correction (EFC). The EFC aims at minimizing the intrinsi ...

Light matter interactions such as extinction, reflection, and transmission can be described by classical optics. Dur-ing the past decades, research focused on a novel resonant extinction type called plasmonics that allows for en-hancement of both types of ...

Orthorhombic molybdenum trioxide (alpha-MoO3), a newly discovered polaritonic van der Waals crystal, is attracting significant attention due to its strongly anisotropic mid-infrared phonon-polaritons. At the same time, coupling of polariton with its mirror ...

Snowfall is one of the main positive contributors to the surface mass balance of the Antarctic ice sheet. There are several techniques to monitor solid precipitation on the continent. Among them, meteorological radars provide the means to characterize the ...

The fabrication of high-hardness non-hydrogenated diamond-like carbon (DLC) via standard magnetron sputtering (MS) is often hindered by the low sputtering yields and ionisation rates of carbon, therefore investigations into pulsed alternatives of MS, else ...

The optical characterization of metasurfaces and nanostructures that alter the polarization of light is tricky and can lead to unphysical results, such as reflectance beyond unity. We track the origin of such pitfalls to the response of some typical optica ...

On ITER, long pulse gyrotrons are required as a power source for electron cyclotron heating (ECH) and current drive (CD). The microwaves are guided from the gyrotrons, which are placed far from the Tokamak, into the plasma by transmission lines (TLs) and a ...

This work presents a characterisation of mesocyclone occurrence and frequency in the Alpine region, as observed from the Swiss operational radar network; 5 years of radar data are processed with a thunderstorm detection and tracking algorithm and subsequen ...

Immense field enhancement and nanoscale confinement of light are possible within nanoparticle-on-mirror (NPoM) plasmonic resonators, which enable novel optically activated physical and chemical phenomena and render these nanocavities greatly sensitive to m ...

Precipitation is the result of a chain of meteorological processes ranging from the large- to the micro-scale. While the transport of moisture and lifting mechanisms leading to cloud formation are mostly governed by dynamical processes, the formation and g ...

Incorporation of Mo into pure WO3 thin films is of interest for electrochromic devices, as it improves colour neutrality in the dark state. Existing literature still lacks reliable quantitative data on the complex dielectric function of such coatings. In t ...

On 28 February 2018, 57mm of precipitation associated with a warm conveyor belt (WCB) fell within 21 h over South Korea. To investigate how the large-scale circulation influenced the microphysics of this intense precipitation event, we used radar measureme ...

The mm-wave power exiting the eight In-Vessel waveguides inside the ITER Electron Cyclotron Upper Launcher is reflected by three fixed mirror sets and finally aimed by two independent steering mirrors to specific plasma locations. A design solution for bot ...

The use of radar for precipitation measurement in mountainous regions is complicated by many factors, especially beam shielding by terrain features, which, for example, reduces the visibility of the shallow precipitation systems during the cold season. Whe ...

Region-based Recursive Doppler Dealiasing (R2D2) is a novel dealiasing algorithm to unfold Doppler velocity fields obtained by operational radar measurements. It specializes in resolving issues when the magnitude of the gate-to-gate velocity shear approach ...
