Modeling using the Visible Human Dataset

Résumé

Modeling with medical images in this context provides both structural and topological information of different elements. In addition to displaying these elements, the interest is in using them for physically based deformation simulation, motion generation and analysis, and model validation. The Visible Human Dataset (VHD) has provided a referential standard as medical image data for modeling. Surface based models fitting to the boundary of the medical image data are extracted and interactive 3D tools are employed for their investigation, analysis and manipulation. A comprehensive database consisting of the structural as well as topological description of a body part (here the upper limb) is built. In addition to the medical field, topological modeling of human anatomy applies to other areas such as sports, education and entertainment involving animation/simulation

Topological order

In physics, topological order is a kind of order in the zero-temperature phase of matter (also known as quantum matter). Macroscopically, topological order is defined and described by robust ground state degeneracy and quantized non-Abelian geometric phases of degenerate ground states. Microscopically, topological orders correspond to patterns of long-range quantum entanglement. States with different topological orders (or different patterns of long range entanglements) cannot change into each other without a phase transition.

Medical image computing

Medical image computing (MIC) is an interdisciplinary field at the intersection of computer science, information engineering, electrical engineering, physics, mathematics and medicine. This field develops computational and mathematical methods for solving problems pertaining to medical images and their use for biomedical research and clinical care. The main goal of MIC is to extract clinically relevant information or knowledge from medical images.

Topological quantum computer

A topological quantum computer is a theoretical quantum computer proposed by Russian-American physicist Alexei Kitaev in 1997. It employs quasiparticles in two-dimensional systems, called anyons, whose world lines pass around one another to form braids in a three-dimensional spacetime (i.e., one temporal plus two spatial dimensions). These braids form the logic gates that make up the computer. The advantage of a quantum computer based on quantum braids over using trapped quantum particles is that the former is much more stable.
