Cobalt(II) complexes featuring hexadentate amino-pyridyl ligands have been recently discovered as highly active catalysts for the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction (HER), whose high performance arises from the possibility of assisting proton transfer processes v ...

Degradation of cementitious materials by sulfate ions is commonly classified into chemical and physical sulfate attack. So-called "physical" attack dominates in many field situations, but laboratory testing focuses on "chemical" attack under full-immersion ...

Water splitting is one of the cleanest ways to store energy. The production of hydrogen and oxygen gases can be utilized in fuel cells to generate electricity, power, and heat. In the water splitting process, the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), taking pla ...

Organic micropollutants (MPs) are increasingly detected in water resources, which can be a concern for human health and the aquatic environment. Ultraviolet (UV) radiation based advanced oxidation processes (AOP) such as low-pressure mercury vapor arc lamp ...

Radioactive waste is among the most dangerous anthropogenic waste and its safe disposal is a challenging multi-generational task. Many nations have sought for the peaceful application of nuclear fission for the reliable production of electric energy to pow ...

The production of radioisotope beams at the ISOLDE (Isotope Separator OnLine DEvice) facility at CERN is achieved by irradiating target materials (e.g. uranium carbides and metal foils) with protons. The materials are usually operated at temperatures above ...

The photo-Fenton process (Fe-2+,Fe-3+/H2O2/hv) is known to degrade aqueous organic compounds at acidic pHs. Nevertheless, recent studies have shown that this process also occurs at circumneutral pHs. Dihydroxybenzene isomers (i.e., resorcinol, hydroquinone ...

This paper presents an experimental study of the impact of toluene on the performance of anode-supported (AS) Ni/YSZ SOFC operating at ∼800 °C, 0.25 A/cm2 fed with H2 and biosyngas. Toluene was added to the fuel stream and its concentration increased from ...

This study addresses the bacterial inactivation mechanism by photo-Fenton process at near-neutral pH, focusing on iron-oxides and iron-citrate as photocatalysts for solar water disinfection and using E. coli as a bacteria model. Cell envelope damage during ...

Biodegradable polymers are increasingly at the heart of therapeutic devices. Particularly in the form of thin and elongated fibers, they offer an effective strategy for controlled-release in a variety of biomedical configurations such as sutures, scaffolds ...

The mechanisms underlying bacterial inactivation by solar photo-Fenton at near-neutral pH have not yet been investigated in detail. In particular, no consensus exists on the bacterial inactivation mechanism under solar light enhanced by the Fenton's reagen ...

This is a comparative study of photolytic degradation under exposure to UV254 nm and solar-simulator irradiation of a mixture of eight equally concentrated relevant micropollutants in the presence of H2O2 and Fe(II) in ultrapure water, Lake Geneva water, a ...

Grid turbulence of polyethylene oxide (PEO) solutions (Polyox WSR-301 in H2O) has been investigated experimentally for three concentrations of 25, 50 and 100 weight ppm, at a turbulence Reynolds number based on a Taylor microscale of Re-lambda approximate ...

Iron photo-assisted inactivation of wild enteric bacteria (total coliforms/E. coil and Salmonella spp.) was carried out in water from the Sahelian wells having different pH (W1:4.9 and W2: 6.3) and a natural iron content of 0.07 mg/L We evaluate the effici ...

Novel Fe supported catalysts were prepared by immobilizing iron species on commercial polyethylene via three different methods: (1) acidic pre-treatment of the polyethylene followed by impregnation in aqueous Fe(NO3)(3), (2) TiO2 photo-catalytic pre-treatm ...

The anaerobic degradation potential at a chloroethene-contaminated site was investigated by operating two anoxic column aquifer microcosms enriched in iron(III). One column was fed with vinyl chloride (VC) only (column A) and one with acetate in addition ( ...

Natural polymers such as those present in foods contain abundant noncovalent intra- and intermolecular interactions, notably hydrogen bonds, which make them rigid when dry, but on exposure to water soften, due to disruption of these interactions. This soft ...

The work presented in this thesis is a part of the European project INNOWATECH. The global objective of this project was to provide effective technological solutions for the treatment of industrial wastewater, to propose new concepts in wastewater treatmen ...

The photodegradation of phenol and dichloroacetic acid (DCAA) by \ce{BiVO4} was studied in the absence as well as presence of selected electron scavengers. The experiments were performed under the visible (vis) irradiation of aqueous solutions over a wide ...

This thesis presents a systematic study on the merits and limitations on using pin-by-pin resolution and transport theory based approaches for nuclear core design calculations. Starting from the lattice codes and an optimal cross section generation scheme, ...
