Microbial communities perform essential ecosystem functions such as the remineralization of organic carbon that exists as biopolymers. The first step in mineralization is performed by biopolymer degraders, which harbor enzymes that can break down polymers ...

Understanding the mechanical behavior of silicon nanowiresis essentialfor the implementation of advanced nanoscale devices. Although bendingtests are predominantly used for this purpose, their findings shouldbe properly interpreted through modeling. Variou ...

Growth approaches that limit the interface area between layers to nanoscale regions are emerging as a promising pathway to limit the interface defect formation due to mismatching lattice parameters or thermal expansion coefficient. Interfacial defect mitig ...

In this note, we demonstrate direct high-temperature growth of single-crystalline GaN on c-plane ScAlMgO4 substrates by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition, without using low-temperature buffers. We found that a trimethylaluminium preflow was crucial to ...

Nanofabrication is key to many technological advances, especially the challenge of merging nanophotonics with electronics. Here, we investigate the fabrication process of plasmonic interdigitated gold electrodes having a very high aspect ratio (i.e. long a ...

Within the extracellular matrix, matricellular proteins are dynamically expressed nonstructural proteins that interact with cell surface receptors, growth factors, and proteases, as well as with structural matrix proteins. The cellular communication networ ...

Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) have unique optoelectronic properties that make them suitable for applications ranging from phototherapy to imaging and sensing, but their uptake has mainly been explored in eukaryotic cells. Here the authors explore ...

In this article, we review the growing literature on financial technology (FinTech) lending-the provision of credit facilitated by technology that improves the customer-lender interaction or used in lenders' screening and monitoring of borrowers. FinTech l ...

Selective area epitaxy constitutes a mainstream method to obtain reproducible nanomaterials. As a counterpart, self-assembly allows their growth without costly substrate preparation, with the drawback of uncontrolled positioning. We propose a mixed approac ...

Propagation of microorganisms is based on three fundamental processes: cell growth, DNA replication, and cell division. Although important for antibacterial drug development, these processes are poorly understood in Actinobacteria, a medically important ph ...

Molecular simulations allow to investigate the behaviour of materials at the atomistic level, shedding light on phenomena that cannot be directly observed in experiments. Accurate results can be obtained with ab initio methods, while simulations of large-s ...

Selective area growth of zinc phosphide (Zn3P2) on InP provides a pathway to high-quality semiconductor nanostructures and textured thin films made of earth-abundant elements. In the precoalescence stage, Zn3P2 emerges in the form of nanoislands undergoing ...

For the manufacturing of complex biopharmaceuticals using bioreactors with cultivated mammalian cells, high product concentration is an important objective. The phenotype of the cells in a reactor plays an important role. Are clonal cell populations showin ...

We investigate the density of defects and the degradation rate in InGaN light-emitting diodes having identical dislocation density and epitaxial structure, but different indium content in the quantum well (QW; 12%, 16%, 20%). Our results, based on combined ...

Three-dimensional (3D) control over the placement of bioactive cues is fundamental to understand cell guidance and develop engineered tissues. Two-photon patterning (2PP) provides such placement at micro- to millimeter scale, but nonspecific interactions b ...

Mutations in APC promote colorectal cancer (CRC) progression through uncontrolled WNT signaling. Patients with desmoplastic CRC have a significantly worse prognosis and do not benefit from chemotherapy, but the mechanisms underlying the differential respon ...

Progress in nanotechnology, including fabrication and characterization tools, opened up the unprecedented low dimensional materials era, where we can manipulate and structure matter on a size scale that we could not reach before. Due to many interesting pr ...

An enzymatically cross-linked polyethylene glycol (PEG)-based hydrogel was engineered to promote and align nerve cells in a three-dimensional manner. To render the injectable, otherwise bioinert, PEG-based material supportive for cell growth, its mechanica ...

We build a model of endogenous, innovation-driven growth in which innovative firms have costly access to outside financing and hoard cash reserves to maintain financial flexibility. We show that financing frictions slow down Schumpeterian creative destruct ...

Bacteria are the most diverse and abundant kingdom of life and have adapted to survive and thrive in habitats around the globe. When provided with ample nutrients they grow and divide at staggering rates, increasing their population exponentially. Upon nut ...
