Human babies have a natural desire to interact with new toys and objects, through which they learn how the world around them works, e.g., that glass shatters when dropped, but a rubber ball does not. When their predictions are proven incorrect, such as whe ...

Physics-informed machine learning (PIML) is a set of methods and tools that systematically integrate machine learning (ML) algorithms with physical constraints and abstract mathematical models developed in scientific and engineering domains. As opposed to ...

Aortic diastolic pressure decay (DPD) has been shown to have considerable pathophysiological relevance in the assessment of vascular health, as it is significantly affected by arterial stiffening. Nonetheless, the aortic pressure waveform is rarely availab ...

Many engineering fields rely on frequency-domain dynamical systems for the mathematical modeling of physical (electrical/mechanical/etc.) structures. With the growing need for more accurate and reliable results, the computational burden incurred by frequen ...

This paper deals with the mathematical model that describes the function of the human heart. More specifically, it addresses the equations that express the electromechanical process, that is the mechanical deformation (contraction and relaxation) of the he ...

Industrial operations consume energy and water in large quantities without accounting for potential economic and environmental burdens on future generations. Consumption of energy (mainly in the form of high pressure steam) and water (in the form of proces ...

Advances in experimental techniques and computational power allowing researchers to gather anatomical and electrophysiological data at unprecedented levels of detail have fostered the development of increasingly complex models in computational neuroscience ...

A moving mesh approach is employed to simulate two-phase flow with phase change. The mathematical model is based on the Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) description of the axisymmetric Navier-Stokes equations and energy conservation. These equations are ...

Mathematical and numerical modelling of the cardiovascular system is a research topic that has attracted remarkable interest from the mathematical community because of its intrinsic mathematical difficulty and the increasing impact of cardiovascular diseas ...

Systems biology is a multidisciplinary field that weaves together all the basic sciences through the use of computational and bioinformatics tools, to provide a more integrative view of the complex molecular interactions taking place within and among cells ...

This review paper addresses the so called geometric multiscale approach for the numerical simulation of blood flow problems, from its origin (that we can collocate in the second half of '90s) to our days. By this approach the blood fluid-dynamics in the wh ...

Cellular functions are largely regulated by reversible post-translational modifications of proteins which act as switches. Amongst these, S-palmitoylation is unique in that it confers hydrophobicity. Due to technical difficulties, the understanding of this ...

The aim of the present research is to identify, describe and quantify the principal mechanic-hydraulic relationships during hydraulic transients in pressurized pipe flows in view of improving pipe design and reduce pipe and system failure. Phenomena affect ...

Background: Proliferative kidney disease (PKD) affects salmonid populations in European and North-American rivers. It is caused by the endoparasitic myxozoan Tetracapsuloides bryosalmonae, which exploits freshwater bryozoans and salmonids as hosts. Inciden ...

The paper presents the analysis of the effect of Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI) occurring during hydraulic transients in pipe coils, in particular the main developments and findings. The research work comprises the development of mathematical models, th ...

Geophysical gravity-driven flows -- including avalanches, debris flows, pyroclastic flows and submarine turbidity currents -- are multiphase natural hazards that flow under the influence of gravity. Despite their differences, they share much of the same ph ...

Gasoline and other oil byproducts are commonly stored in steel tanks that rest on ground without any anchorage. Under strong motion, the impulsive mass of the contained liquid generates a moment about the base of the tank capable of causing partial uplift ...

Ecohydrological footprints are defined as the response of ecosystem functions or services to changes in their hydrologic drivers. In this thesis, several diverse footprints are addressed: noise-driven effects on storage-discharge relations and catchment st ...

Practitioners and scholars readily agree that firms need to frequently adapt their supply chain portfolios to respond to today's rapidly evolving business dynamics. Adapting a well established supply chain portfolio, however, may involve high costs and exp ...

We introduce and validate a novel mathematical model for computing the radial profiles of both axial and circumferential velocity components, respectively, of the swirling flow exiting the runner of hydraulic turbines within the full operating range. We as ...
