Integrated photonic devices based on Si3N4 waveguides allow for the exploitation of nonlinear frequency conversion, exhibit low propagation loss, and have led to advances in compact atomic clocks, ultrafast ranging, and spectroscopy. Yet, the lack of Pocke ...

Diamond is an exceptional material - hard, stiff, transparent, which makes it ideal for the fabrication of optical and mechanical systems that take advantage of these properties. Diamond is not only "better", but it offers the possibility of integrating br ...

High index optical waveguide devices such as slab waveguides, strip waveguides and fibers play extremely important roles in a wide range of modern applications including telecommunications, sensing, lasing, interferometry, and resonant amplification. Yet, ...

A convenient approach for slowing down light in integrated optical circuits is by utilizing a set of coupled microcavities in a photonic crystal lattice. While this provides for flexibility in dispersion engineering, light transport is influenced by a comb ...

The ability to control and manipulate light is a fundamental aspect that is at the very core of the development of integrated photonic circuits. It is desirable to achieve such control down to a scale that is comparable to or smaller than the wavelength of ...

Bloch surface waves (BSWs) are sustained at the interface of a suitably designed one-dimensional (1D) dielectric photonic crystal and an ambient material. The elements that control the propagation of BSWs are defined by a spatially structured device layer ...

Background: The periodic dielectric multilayers sustaining Bloch surface waves have been proposed as a platformfor the sensing applications and the two dimensional integrated optics. In this paper, we present the experimental and theoretical investigation ...

Today's standard fabrication processes are just capable of manufacturing slab of photonic and phononic crystals, so an efficient method for analysis of these crystals is indispensable. Plane wave expansion (PWE) as a widely used method in studying photonic ...

Bloch surface waves (BSWs) are surface electromagnetic modes that propagate at the interface between a multilayer substrate and a homogeneous external medium. The optical field of the surface mode is confined near the surface of the multilayer. This vertic ...

Intensive developments of plasmonic nanomaterials over recent decades have inspired appealing applications in biosensing, optical trapping, fluorescence enhancement and light harvesting in solar cells. These nanostructures supporting unique light-matter in ...

An integrated electronic-photonic phase-locked loop (PLL) modulates the frequency of a tunable laser for use in frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) lidar 3D imaging. The proposed lidar can perform 180k range measurements per second. The rms depth pr ...

At the end of the 1970s, it was confirmed that dielectric multilayers can sustain Bloch surface waves (BSWs). However, BSWs were not widely studied until more recently. Taking advantage of their high-quality factor, sensing applications have focused on BSW ...

We optimize a photonic crystal slab for the generation of second harmonic. The optimization consists in two steps. In the first step a regular photonic crystal, consisting in a triangular lattice of circular holes in a dielectric slab, is optimized by allo ...

Since the invention of optical fiber cable data transmission using light has become ubiquitous in the past years. Nonlinear optical effects, which are hardly noticed in our daily life, have become crucial and highly influential for the design and performan ...

Recently stacked metamaterial structures coupled to a conductive plane have been investigated and have been shown to exhibit the same properties as stacked structures with double the layers, due to dipole mirror coupling. Here we study a system of stacked ...

High-resolution infrared absorption spectroscopy of acetylene gas is demonstrated in dispersion-engineered photonic crystal waveguides under slow light propagation. Individual absorption profiles are obtained for both TE and TM polarizations for group indi ...

Optical frequency references are devices providing well-defined and stable optical frequency responses to incoming radiation for applications such as high-precision spectroscopy and optical fibre communications. To stabilise the emission frequency of laser ...

We present a systematic numerical approach to compute the eigenmodes and the related eigenfrequencies of a disordered photonic crystal, characterized by small fluctuations of the otherwise periodic dielectric profile. The field eigenmodes are expanded on t ...

The authors experimentally investigate the effects of atomic layer deposition (ALD) and laser-assisted oxidation on the optical modes in GaAs L3 photonic crystal air-bridge cavities, using layers of InAs quantum dots as internal light source. Four distinct ...

State-of-the-art nanophotonic devices based on semiconductor technology use total internal reflection or the photonic bandgap effect to reduce the waveguide core dimensions down to hundreds of nanometers, ensuring strong optical confinement within the scal ...
