Quantum mechanics imposes a limit on the precision of a continuous position measurement of a harmonic oscillator, due to backaction arising from quantum fluctuations in the measurement field. This standard quantum limit can be surpassed by monitoring only ...

Harmonic oscillators might be one of the most fundamental entities described by physics. Yet they stay relevant in recent research. The topological properties associated with exceptional points that can occur when two modes interact have generated much int ...

Introduction Findings of recent studies indicate that it is possible to enhance cognitive capacities of healthy individuals by means of individual upper alpha neurofeedback training (NFT). Although these results are promising, most of this research was con ...

Synchronization, the temporal coordination of coupled oscillators, allows fireflies to flash in unison, neurons to fire collectively, and human crowds to fall in step on the London millenium bridge. Here, we interpret active (or self-propelled) chiral micr ...

Multistable Mechanisms are mechanical devices having more than one stable state. Since these mechanisms can maintain different deformations with zero force, they are advantageous for low power environments such as wristwatches and medical devices. In this ...

In previous work, we showed that two degree of freedom oscillators can be advantageously applied to horological time bases since they can be used to eliminate the escapement mechanism. We subsequently examined planar two degree of freedom oscillators based ...

Flexure pivot based oscillators can advantageously replace the hairspring and balance wheel, the time base used in mechanical watches, by drastically reducing friction. However, flexure pivots have drawbacks including gravity sensitivity and restoring torq ...

wherein k1, k3, k5 . . . are constants and θ is an angle of inclination of said third axis (x, P) of said inertial body with respect to a direction of said third axis (xr) when said inertial body is in said resting position. ...

Mechanical oscillator (10) comprising an inertial body (101) joined to a support (100) by means of an elastic system (102, 103, 104, 105, 106, 107) arranged to provide the inertial body (101) with substantially no degrees of freedom in translation and with ...

Classical mechanical watch plain bearing pivots have frictional losses limiting the quality factor of the hairspring-balance wheel oscillator. Replacement by flexure pivots leads to a drastic reduction in friction and an order of magnitude increase in qual ...

Sideband asymmetry between the Stokes and anti-Stokes scattering is a signature of the mechanical oscillators in the quantum regime. It has been demonstrated in several optomechanical systems, as a self-calibrated thermometry method. We present motional si ...

When measuring the position of a mechanical oscillator, quantum mechanics imposes a strict limit on the attainable precision: Any reduction of imprecision leads to increased quantum backaction of the measuring probe on the oscillator. This quantum limit ca ...

We resolve the thermal motion of a high-stress silicon nitride nanobeam at frequencies far below its fundamental flexural resonance (3.4 MHz) using cavity-enhanced optical interferometry. Over two decades, the displacement spectrum is well-modeled by that ...
