Electronic devices play an irreplaceable role in our lives. With the tightening time to market, exploding demand for computing power, and continuous desire for smaller, faster, less energy-consuming, and lower-cost chips, computer-aided design for electron ...

Superconducting electronics provide us with cryogenic digital circuits that can rival established technologies in performance and energy consumption. Today, the lack of tools for the design of large-scale integrated superconducting circuits is a major obst ...

Modern integrated circuits are tiny yet incredibly complex technological artifacts, composed of millions and billions of individual structures working in unison. Managing their complexity and facilitating their design drove part of the co-evolution of mode ...

Situational awareness strategies are essential for the reliable and secure operation of the electric power grid which represents critical infrastructure in modern society. With the rise of converter-interfaced renewable generation and the consequent shift ...

Humans are chronically exposed to airborne microplastics (MPs) by inhalation. Various types of polymer particles have been detected in lung samples, which could pose a threat to human health. Inhalation toxicological studies are crucial for assessing the e ...

How to measure students' Computational Problem-Solving (CPS) competencies is an ongoing research topic. Prevalent approaches vary by measurement tools (e.g., interactive programming, multiple-choice tests, or programming-independent tests) and task types ( ...

In light of the challenges posed by climate change and the goals of the Paris Agreement, electricity generation is shifting to a more renewable and decentralized pattern, while the operation of systems like buildings is increasingly electrified. This calls ...

Smarty is a fully-reconfigurable on-chip feed-forward artificial neural network (ANN) with ten integrated time-to-digital converters (TDCs) designed in a 16 nm FinFET CMOS technology node. The integration of TDCs together with an ANN aims to reduce system ...

Entanglement forging based variational algorithms leverage the bipartition of quantum systems for addressing ground-state problems. The primary limitation of these approaches lies in the exponential summation required over the numerous potential basis stat ...

Given a sequence of functions

f_1,\ldots,f_n

with

f_i:\mathcal{D}\mapsto \mathbb{R}

, finite-sum minimization seeks a point

{x}^\star \in \mathcal{D}

minimizing

\sum_{j=1}^nf_j(x)/n

. In this work, we propose a key twist into the finite-sum minimizat ...

Dataflow programming is a methodology that enables the development of high-level, parametric programs that are independent of the underlying platform. This approach is particularly useful for heterogeneous platforms, as it eliminates the need to rewrite ap ...

To achieve resource-efficient hardware designs, high-level synthesis (HLS) tools share (i.e., time-multiplex) functional units among operations of the same type. This optimization is typically performed in conjunction with operation scheduling to ensure th ...

Today's continued increase in demand for processing power, despite the slowdown of Moore's law, has led to an increase in processor count, which has resulted in energy consumption and distribution problems. To address this, there is a growing trend toward ...

The SALUTE project aims at evaluating performance of electroacoustic metasurface, employing a surface array of controlled electroacoustic actuators, for smart acoustic lining under grazing turbulent flow to be used in UHBR Technologies Engines. Theoretical ...

According to physicalism, everything is physical or metaphysically connected to the physical. If physicalism were true, it seems that we should - in principle - be able to reduce the descriptions and explanations of special sciences to physical ones, for e ...

Event-based sensors have the potential to optimize energy consumption at every stage in the signal processing pipeline, including data acquisition, transmission, processing, and storage. However, almost all state-of-the-art systems are still built upon th ...

The demise of Moore's Law and Dennard scaling has resulted in diminishing performance gains for general-purpose processors, and so has prompted a surge in academic and commercial interest for hardware accelerators. Specialized hardware has already redefine ...

We study the computational complexity of the optimal transport problem that evaluates the Wasser- stein distance between the distributions of two K-dimensional discrete random vectors. The best known algorithms for this problem run in polynomial time in th ...

Dataflow circuits promise to overcome the scheduling limitations of standard HLS solutions. However, their performance suffers due to timing overheads caused by their handshake communication protocol. Current pipelining solutions fail to account for logic ...

Epilepsy is a common chronic neurological disorder that causes recurring seizures and affects more than 50 million people worldwide. Implantable medical devices (IMDs) are regarded as effective tools to cure patients who suffer from refractory epilepsy. Se ...
