In almost all algorithms for Model Predictive Control (MPC), the most time-consuming step is to solve some form of Linear Quadratic (LQ) Optimal Control Problem (OCP) repeatedly. The commonly recognized best option for this is a Riccati recursion based sol ...

Requirements for pointing accuracy in Earth observation missions have tightened tolerable microvibration levels on satellites. Various mitigation techniques, including active, passive, and hybrid methods, have been proposed to prevent microvibration propag ...

In this paper, we describe a numerical framework for achieving passive thermal cloaking of arbitrary shapes in both static and transient regimes. The design strategy is cast as the solution of an optimal control problem (OCP) for the heat equation where th ...

Controlling large-scale cyber-physical systems necessitates optimal distributed policies, relying solely on local real-time data and limited communication with neighboring agents. However, finding optimal controllers remains challenging, even in seemingly ...

This paper investigates the influence of typical gravity connections on the seismic demands of steel concentrically braced frame (CBF) buildings with friction dampers as dissipative floor connectors. The investigated connections include (i) typical shear t ...

This work proposes a differential evolution algorithm to control a vehicle-to-grid (V2G) system based on photovoltaic generation and energy cost curves, and constraints associated with the power converters' operation, battery charging strategy, and initial ...

As we transition toward the deployment of data-driven controllers for black-box cyberphysical systems, complying with hard safety constraints becomes a primary concern. Two key aspects should be addressed when input-output data are corrupted by noise: how ...

A fully renewable Europe is a major climate goal and an assumed priority by the European Union. However, intermittent renewables require hefty backup power sources to compensate for sudden generation shortfalls, ensuring grid stability and balance across t ...

Truly wearable, fully flexible, and multiparametric sweat analysis with soft and socially discrete packaging offers tremendous potential to enable the next generation of noninvasive digital biomarkers analysis. Several examples of miniaturized potentiometr ...

Lignocellulose is one of the most promising renewable bioresources for the production of chemicals. For sustainable and competitive biorefineries, effective valorization of all biomass fractions is crucial. However, current efforts in lignocellulose fracti ...

Modern occupants hardly use their capacity to adapt to the wide range of thermal environments due to living in well-insulated buildings with indoor climatization. However, climate change with associated health hazards necessitates exploring the limits of h ...

The power-to-methane process using a solid-oxide electrolyser, followed by an exothermic methanation reactor, is effective for the production of an energy carrier (synthesis methane) that can be readily stored and transported at a large scale. A significan ...

We propose a framework for the stability verification of Mixed-Integer Linear Programming (MILP) representable control policies. This framework compares a fixed candidate policy, which admits an efficient parameterization and can be evaluated at a low comp ...

The Central Solenoid (CS) is at the core of the EU DEMO tokamak, and has a strong impact on the tokamak design and the overall machine size. By ramping its current, the CS generates a change of magnetic flux, which initiates the plasma, and induces and con ...

Heavy metal contamination has become one of the greatest global environmental problems. In this study, a magnetic calcium-alginate hydrogel-sphere encapsulated with Fe-Mn-Zr ternary-metal composite (MCHETC) was prepared through a combined co-precipitation ...

Image-based machine learning models can be used to make the sorting and grading of agricultural products more efficient. In many regions, implementing such systems can be difficult due to the lack of centralization and automation of postharvest supply chai ...

Metal halide perovskites have thepotential to revolutionizethefield of photovoltaics, though limited stability has impeded commercialexploitation. The soft heterointerface between the perovskite andcharge-transporting layer is one of the major bottlenecks ...

An active noise reduction system (2) comprising an electroacoustic plasma transducer (5) for mounting in an installation structure and an acoustic sensing system (11). The electroacoustic plasma transducer comprises a plasma electrode arrangement (6) inclu ...

The increasing penetration of intermittent distributed energy resources in power networks calls for novel planning and control methodologies which hinge on detailed knowledge of the grid. However, reliable information concerning the system topology and par ...
