Time series of hydrochemical parameters support the investigation of dominant karst hydrological processes and conceptual model structures. Nevertheless, high costs for sample collection and analyses cause hydrochemical data to be rarely available at a suf ...

Potential-induced degradation (PID) may be a serious concern in photovoltaic (PV) modules and plants, particularly when approaching high system voltages (1500+ V). Here, we investigate PID occurring in bifacial rear-emitter silicon heterojunction (SHJ) sol ...

Although important for atmospheric processes and gas-phase catalysis, very little is known about the hydration state of ions in the vapor phase. Here we study the evaporation energetics and kinetics of a chloride ion from liquid water by molecular dynamics ...

Biophysical models of diffusion in white matter have been center-stage over the past two decades and are essentially based on what is now commonly referred to as the "Standard Model" (SM) of non-exchanging anisotropic compartments with Gaussian diffusion. ...

Temperature-induced Lifshitz transitions have been identified in several materials. Their chemical potential shows a substantial shift with changing temperature. The common feature of these materials is the coexistence of electron and hole pockets in the v ...

Fast synaptic transmission relies upon the activation of ionotropic receptors by neurotransmitter release to evoke postsynaptic potentials. Glutamate and GABA play dominant roles in driving highly dynamic activity in synaptically connected neuronal circuit ...

Two-dimensional MXenes with their outstanding physical and chemical properties have been extensively used in numerous fields such as electrochemical energy storage, catalysis, and sensing. In these applications, high active surface area and facilitated dif ...

G protein-coupled receptors play essential roles in cellular processes such as neuronal signaling, vision, olfaction, tasting, and metabolism. As GPCRs are the most important drug targets, understanding their interactions with ligands is of utmost importan ...

The distribution of electrolytes in an electric field usually relies on theories based on the Poisson-Boltzmann formalism. These models predict that, in the case of a metallic electrode, ionic charges screen the electrode potential, leading to concentratio ...

The voltage-gated potassium (Kv) channels, encoded by 40 genes, repolarize all electrically excitable cells, including plant, cardiac, and neuronal cells. Although these genes were fully sequenced decades ago, a comprehensive kinetic characterization of al ...

Lipid membranes are self-assembled structures whose composition determines the properties of membranes of cells and organelles. The molecular level understanding of lipid membranes is based on spectroscopy and MD simulations of lipid monolayer systems. As ...

Here we present measurements of surface tension and viscosity of the bulk glass-forming alloy Pd43Cu27Ni10P20 performed during containerless processing under reduced gravity. We applied the oscillating drop method in an electromagnetic levitation facility ...

Mendeleev in his first publication ordered the chemical elements following an apparent periodicity of properties such as atomic volume and valence. The reactivity of the elements was only studied systematically many years later. To illustrate the systemati ...

The 5-hydroxytryptamine 3 receptor (5-HT3R) is a member of the pentameric ligand-gated ion channel (pLGIC) family, that plays an important role in fast signal transduction and cell-cell communication in synapses: They convert a chemical signal from a neuro ...

In the recent years, the development of automated systems for cellular monitoring has been highly promoted in basic biological research as well as in industries and medical diagnostic. Several methods for transduction of cellular signals have been investig ...

The diffusion of protons and hydroxide ions along water wires provides an efficient mechanism for charge transport that is exploited by biological membrane channels and shows promise for technological applications such as fuel cells. However, what is lacki ...

Hybrid magnetic nanoparticles based on poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA) and super-paramagnetic iron oxide nanopaticles (SPIONs) with selective surface modification has been developed for heavy metal removal by applying external magnetic fields. The nanopart ...

Stochastic channel gating is the major source of intrinsic neuronal noise whose functional consequences at the microcircuit- and network-levels have been only partly explored. A systematic study of this channel noise in large ensembles of biophysically det ...

The layered transition-metal oxide Nax CoO2 has been studied extensively both for its correlated electronic properties as well as for potential battery applications. It was discovered that high-temperature Na ion vacancy order and dynamics can be very usef ...

Presently, the cells' electrical activity is measured either by extracellular microelectrode array (MEA) or by microscopic fluorescence imaging methods. The MEA is a non-invasive in vitro technique which allows long-term recording at multicellular level wh ...
