Diffusion is one of the most fundamental concepts in materials science, playing a pivotal role in materials synthesis, forming, and degradation. Of particular importance is solid state interdiffusion of metals which defines the usable parameter space for m ...

We report a new approach to controllable thermal stimulation of a single living cell and its compartments. The technique is based on the use of a single polycrystalline diamond particle containing silicon-vacancy (SiV) color centers. Due to the presence of ...

The impressive mechanical properties of single phase BCC High Entropy Alloys (HEAs) has renewed interest in understanding the mechanisms controlling strength in BCC alloys. Theory and simulation of strengthening of screw dislocations in HEAs shows that scr ...

Miniaturization has been at the forefront of scientific research in the past decade covering diverse areas such as electronics, mechanics, and optics. While 'small is beautiful' may be a vast generalization, the true benefits of miniaturization are especia ...

Tensile test data for structural steels are ubiquitous. Yet, the information monotonic loading provides with respect to the material's characteristics is limited. Notably, features of inelastic response to cyclic loading, such as the Bauschinger eect, can ...

The metabolic activity of living organisms results in cellular motion on a nanometric scale that can be efficiently detected by micro- and nano- fabricated sensors. Quartz crystal microbalance and atomic force microscopy (AFM) inspired techniques have rece ...

All mechanical systems, naturally occurring or human-produced, are subjected to friction and wear at the interface of solid constituents. Large portions of energy dissipation and loss of material, in every-day life and industrial applications alike, are du ...

The detrimental influence of high levels of sustained load on the compressive strength of concrete has been acknowledged and investigated since the 1950s. Despite the potential significance of this phenomenon in many situations, current design codes still ...

The binary Re1-xMox alloys, known to cover the full range of solid solutions, were successfully synthesized and their crystal structures and physical properties investigated via powder x-ray diffraction, electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, and ...
