Cartilage homeostasis, crucial for musculoskeletal function, is orchestrated by interconnected biophysical cues. In healthy cartilage, repetitive compressive loading not only elicits a range of mechanical stimuli but also induces a gradual transient temper ...

Fibrotic scarring secondary to the foreign body reaction (FBR) generates a physical barrier obstructing the functional interaction of implantable medical devices with the host tissue. The mechanistic basis of the FBR is poorly understood, restricting the c ...

Glenohumeral osteoarthritis is a degenerative shoulder joint disease, which causes the breakdown of articular cartilage and bone. People affected by this disease suffer from severe pain and eventually reduced mobility and poor life quality. This disease is ...

Transparent face masks are the ultimate solution for improving communication during pandemic times while at the same time slowing the spread of pathogens. Here, we demonstrate an easily scalable process consisting of directly electrospinning polyamide nano ...

To comprehend the most detrimental characteristics behind bone fractures, it is key to understand the material and tissue level strain limits and their relation to failure sites. The aim of this study was to investigate the three-dimensional strain distrib ...

Crude glycerol, one of the ever-growing by-product of biodiesel industry and is receiving the closest review in recent times because direct disposal of crude glycerol may emerge ecological issues. The renewability, bioavailability and typical structure of ...

Lignocellulose is a renewable source of fixed carbon and a promising substrate for the production of chemicals and fuels in second generation biorefineries. In this thesis, we engineered artificial microbial consortia for consolidated bioprocessing (CBP) o ...

Engineered fibrous tissues consisting of cells encapsulated within collagen gels are widely used three-dimensional (3D) in vitro models of morphogenesis and wound healing. While cell-mediated matrix remodeling that occurs within these scaffolds has been ex ...

In the last few years, ecofriendly malic acid production has received a potential platform for the bio-based chemicals to replace the dependency of fossil based resources. The main goal of this paper is to explore the feasibility of efficient production of ...

Chronic and acute tendon injuries are frequent afflictions, for which treatment is often long and unsatisfactory. When facing extended injuries, matrices and scaffolds with sufficient biomechanical properties are required for surgical repair and could addi ...

Several approaches to combine bone substitutes with biomolecules, cells or mechanical loading have been explored as an alternative to the limitation and risk-related bone auto- and allo-grafts. In particular, human bone progenitor cells seeded in porous po ...

BACKGROUND: Fracture fixation in weak bone is still a clinical challenge. Screw augmentation was shown to successfully increase their primary stability. The currently used calcium phosphate or polymeric bone cements, however, present important drawbacks su ...

Consolidated bioprocessing (CBP) of lignocellulosic feedstocks to platform chemicals requires complex metabolic processes, which are commonly executed by single genetically engineered microorganisms. Alternatively, synthetic consortia can be employed to co ...

There is a need for efficient and “off-the-shelf” grafts in urethral reconstructive surgery. Currently available surgical techniques require harvesting of grafts from autologous sites, with increased risk of surgical complications and added patient discomf ...

The potential of human fetal bone cells for successful bone regeneration has been shown in vivo. In particular, it has been demonstrated that the seeding of these cells in porous poly-(L-lactic acid)/ ß-tricalcium phosphate scaffolds improved the bone form ...

Micromotion-induced interstitial fluid flow at the bone-implant interface has been proposed to play an important role in aseptic loosening of cementless implants. High fluid velocities are thought to promote aseptic loosening through activation of osteocla ...

Locally applied bisphosphonates, such as Zoledronate, have been shown in several studies to inhibit peri-implant bone resorption and recently to enhance peri-implant bone formation. Studies have also demonstrated positive effects of hydroxyapatite particle ...

Background Total ankle replacement is associated to a high revision rate. To improve implant survival, the potential advantage of prostheses with fixed bearing compared to mobile bearing is unclear. The objective of this study was to test the hypothesis th ...

IMPORTANCE A growing number of neurologic treatments rely on neural implants capable of delivering electrical and chemical stimulation to targeted regions of the central nervous system for extended periods. OBJECTIVE To assess the potential of a novel clas ...

Bone defects generate a worldwide high demand for bone repair and reconstruction. The incidence of bone defect repair in our aging society is expected to increase in the next decades. As bone auto- and allografting solutions often suffer from limited suppl ...
