To fully comprehend visual perception, we need to necessarily understand its temporal dimension. Our visual environment is highly dynamic, requiring the processing and integration of temporal signals in order to make sense of it. Many processes, such as th ...

In the last few years, stroke ranked as the second most common cause of death and is the third most significant condition affecting disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) worldwide. Being the most prevalent and quality of life impacting post-stroke symptom ...

Decisions about a current visual stimulus are systematically biased by recently encountered stimuli, a phenomenon known as serial dependence. In human vision, for instance, we tend to report the features of current images as more similar â i.e., an attra ...

Integration across space and time is essential for the analysis of motion, low contrast, and many more stimuli. A crucial question is what determines the duration of integration. Based on classical models of decision-making, one might expect that integrati ...

Does gravity affect decision-making? This question comes into sharp focus as plans for interplanetary human space missions solidify. In the framework of Bayesian brain theories, gravity encapsulates a strong prior, anchoring agents to a reference frame via ...

Visual decisions are attracted toward features of previous stimuli. This phenomenon, termed serial dependence, has been related to a mechanism that integrates present visual input with stimuli seen up to 10 to 15 s in the past. It is believed that this mec ...

This paper proposes a representational model for image pairs such as consecutive video frames that are related by local pixel displacements, in the hope that the model may shed light on motion perception in primary visual cortex (V1). The model couples the ...

Spatiotemporal features are integrated along motion trajectories. For example, when a central line is followed by pairs of flanking lines, two motion streams diverging from the center are perceived. The central line is rendered invisible by the subsequent ...

Visual processing can be seen as the integration and segmentation of features. Objects are composed of contours, integrated into shapes and segmented from other contours. Information also needs to be integrated to solve the ill-posed problems of vision. Fo ...

The first stage of the Atkinson–Shiffrin model of human memory is a sensory memory (SM). The visual component of the SM was shown to operate within a retinotopic reference frame. However, a retinotopic SM (rSM) is unable to account for vision under natural ...

Information about a moving object is usually poor at each retinotopic location because photoreceptor activation is short, noisy, and affected by shadows, reflections of other objects, and so on. Integration across the motion trajectory may yield a much bet ...

In the classic model of vision, processing is local, feedforward and hierarchical. The first stages of the visual system are retinotopic, i.e., neighboring points in the outside world are mapped onto neighboring photoreceptors of the retina and this is pre ...

The early visual system is organized retinotopically. However, under ecological viewing conditions, motion perception occurs in non-retinotopic coordinates. Even though many studies revealed the central role of nonretinotopic processes, very little is know ...

OBJECTIVE The tremor circuitry has commonly been hypothesized to be driven by one or multiple pacemakers within the cerebello-thalamo-cortical pathway, including the cerebellum, contralateral motor thalamus, and primary motor cortex. However, previous stud ...

Perception depends on reference frames. For example, the "true'' cycloidal motion trajectory of a reflector on a bike's wheel is invisible because we perceive the reflector motion relative to the bike's motion trajectory, which serves as a reference frame. ...

In our daily lives we are exposed simultaneously to multiple sensory stimuli, such as visual, thermal, acoustic and olfactory. Experienced together, they shape our perception of the environment and determine our comfort. In indoor environments, stimuli are ...

There seems to be no common factor for visual perception, i.e., performance in visual tasks correlates only weakly with each other. Similar results were found with visual illusions. One may expect common visual factors for individuals suffering from pathol ...

Automatic prediction of salient regions in images is a well developed topic in the field of computer vision. Yet, virtual reality omnidirectional visual content brings new challenges to this topic, due to a different representation of visual information an ...

Encoding of visual information in the brain is retinotopic: Neighboring points in the visual field are mapped onto neighboring photoreceptors in the retina, and these neighborhood relations are maintained in the early stages of cortical processing. However ...

The motion of parts of an object is usually perceived relative to the object, i.e., nonretinotopically, rather than in retinal coordinates. For example, we perceive a reflector to rotate on the wheel of a moving bicycle even though its trajectory is cycloi ...
