Electrochromic switching with nanocrystalline TiO2 semiconductor films

Résumé

Forward biasing of transparent nanocryst. TiO2 (anatase) films in Li ion contg. org. electrolytes leads to rapid and reversible coloration due to electron accumulation and Li+ intercalation in the anatase lattice. Absorption of > 90% light throughout the visible and near IR can be switched on and off within a few seconds. The nanocryst. morphol. of the film plays a primordial role in enhancing the electrochromic process. Preliminary results from the redn. of a surface attached viologen mol. leading to a blue coloration of the film are reported.

Électrochromisme

L'électrochromisme est la propriété démontrée par certaines espèces chimiques de changer de couleur de manière réversible lorsqu'une charge électrique leur est appliquée, et ce durant un temps court (alimentation électrique par impulsion). Ce changement de couleur est en lien avec le phénomène d'oxydo-réduction. La réversibilité est obtenue lors de l'inversion de la polarité de la tension. L'électrochromisme bénéficie d'un effet mémoire, c'est-à-dire que la couleur obtenue reste la même y compris lorsque la source de tension est déconnectée.

Smart glass

Smart glass, also known as switchable glass, dynamic glass, and smart-tinting glass, is a type of glass that can change its reflective properties to prevent sunlight and heat from entering a building and to also provide privacy. Smart glass for building aims to provide more energy-efficient buildings by reducing the amount of solar heat that passes through glass windows. There are two primary classifications of smart glass: active or passive. The most common active glass technologies used today are electrochromic, liquid crystal, and suspended particle devices (SPD).

Aluminum electrolytic capacitor

Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are polarized electrolytic capacitors whose anode electrode (+) is made of a pure aluminum foil with an etched surface. The aluminum forms a very thin insulating layer of aluminum oxide by anodization that acts as the dielectric of the capacitor. A non-solid electrolyte covers the rough surface of the oxide layer, serving in principle as the second electrode (cathode) (-) of the capacitor. A second aluminum foil called “cathode foil” contacts the electrolyte and serves as the electrical connection to the negative terminal of the capacitor.
