There has been a lot of interest in developing and producing biodegradable polymers to address the current environmental problem caused by the continued usage of synthetic polymers derived from petroleum products. Bioplastics have been identified as a poss ...

All three natural polymers of biomass and the monomer platforms derived from them present multiple avenues to develop products from specialty to bulk markets, which could serve as entry points into the industry for bio-based sustainable materials. However, ...

Phase separation of immiscible fluids is a common phenomenon in polymer chemistry, and is recognized as an important mechanism by which cells compartmentalize their biochemical reactions. Biomolecular condensates are condensed fluid droplets in cells that ...

This Thesis is built around 4 topics, which share in common that they all take advantage of the assets of controlled radical polymerization to either (i) prepare well-defined model systems to address fundamental research questions with regard to the sensit ...

Chemical modifications of cellulose fibers as pretreatment for cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) production have been investigated to improve the production process and the quality of obtained cellulosic nanomaterial. In this study, phosphorylation of cellulose ...

Nowadays, the development of cell therapy relies mainly on the advances made toward cell microencapsulation which allows to evade the need for immunosuppression during cell transplantation. Among the materials considered for cell encapsulation, hydrogels d ...

A method of producing a cryogel-based multicompartment 3D scaffold is herein disclosed. The method comprises the steps of: a) providing a first frozen polymeric layer on a refrigerated support kept at subzero temperature; b) providing subsequent polymeric ...

There is a growing interest in sustainable heterogeneous catalysts based on organic polymers. Here, we describe a series of polyimidazolium salt catalysts, prepared from the direct reaction of arene- bridged bis- and tris-alkyl halides with trimethylsilyli ...

Hydrogels are polymeric materials that have a relatively high capacity for holding water. Recently, a double network (DN) technique was developed to fabricate hydrogels with a toughness comparable to rubber. The mechanical properties of DN hydrogels may be ...

The aim of tissue engineering is to regenerate tissue for the purpose of repairing or replacing diseased or injured tissue. Therefore, cells that are able to proliferate are seeded on scaffolds that provide mechanical stability and direct the three-dimensi ...

Structural components used in civil engineering applications are often subjected to compressive loads. Unlike the tensile strength of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) materials, their compressive strength is resin-dominated, exhibiting lower values and more ...

Boosted by the technological advances in experimental techniques, cellular biology is nowadays facing the need for quantitative approaches in order to rationalize the huge amount of collected data. A particularly succesfull theoretical framework is provide ...

The purpose of this study was to evaluate a new polymer-based and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging-compatible guide wire for its application in MR-guided endovascular interventions, particularly for interventional peripheral MR angiography in swine experime ...

This feature article provides a compilation of tools available for preparing well-defined peptide/protein–polymer conjugates, which are defined as hybrid constructs combining (i) a defined number of peptide/protein segments with uniform chain lengths and d ...

Over the last ten years the attention of the pharmaceutical industry has shifted away from small molecules to focus on new biologics such as antibodies, proteins and therapeutic peptides. Herein, peptides have emerged as a particularly interesting category ...

Peptide based and peptide hybrid materials represent two interesting and challenging classes of biomaterials. Both classes consist of and contain, respectively, one or more polypeptide blocks, endowing the resulting polymers with enhanced self-assembly pro ...

Synthetic cationic polymers are of interest as both nonviral vectors for intracellular gene delivery and antimicrobial agents. For both applications synthetic polymers containing guanidine groups are of special interest since such kind of organic compounds ...

In this work, we present a short summary of the synthesis and characterization of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles and their behavior in vitro and in vivo. Therefore, we have used various characterization techniques to deduce the physical particl ...

The squaric acid mediated bioconjugation reaction is an attractive approach for the amine-selective protein modification with side-chain functional polymers. This manuscript presents 3 squaric acid based atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) initiato ...

Free radical polymerization is the most frequently used technique to produce synthetic polymers. They represent more than 25% of the total volume of materials made by the mankind. 3% thereof correspond to water soluble polymers with annual growth rates est ...
