The behavior of Pt thin films on polyimide foil was investigated through tensile and bending tests. They aimed at determining the stability of these conductive pathways when subject to deformation. Such films are used for the fabrication of sensors on plastic foils. During these tests, the behavior of 50 down to 5 μm wide Pt lines was optically and electrically characterized. When the foil was bent with a radius of curvature of 2.5 mm (corresponding to a strain of1%), the resistivity of the Pt layer increas

Nickel-Titanium (NiTi) shape memory alloys are often used in medical component devices, for instance as guide wires for neurological surgery applications. Manufacturing of such devices becomes more and more challenging, especially considering the need to join them with other metals, like Stainless Steel (SS). Laser welding is a promising technique to realize and to guaranty the mechanical stability of dissimilar metal welds. However, inherent differences in chemical compositions may lead to fracture of the

Uniform Material Law (UML) is a handy and user-friendly method since only the tensile strength data of the material is needed for estimation of the strain-life curve, in contrast to other methods, such as four-point correlation method, universal slopes method, Mitchell's method, modified universal slopes method, which also require the data of the reduction in area or the fracture ductility of the material. On the other hand, the error level of UML estimations can be still decreased by refining the method. T

Besides the 50s revolution of the use of adhesives in the new construction in the works of strengthening and repair of different structural elements, adhesives were extensively used in bridges for a long time. Different applications on bridges were carried out in the last few decades. The most common application of adhesives in bridge engineering was in the form of resin mortar for either bridge bearings or expansion joint nosings. Recently more applications of structural, semi-structural and non structural

We report on the use of the bulge test method to characterize the mechanical properties of miniaturized buckling mode dielectric elastomer actuators (DEA). Our actuator consists of a Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) membrane bonded to a silicon chip with through holes. Compliant electrodes are fabricated on both sides of the membrane by metal ion implantation. The membrane buckles when a critical voltage is applied to the electrodes. The maximum displacements as well as the efficiency of such actuators strongly

Recently, high-strength zirconia-toughened alumina (ZTA) ceramic substrates have attracted interest, because they offer much improved mechanical properties over straight alumina, while maintaining advantages such as good thermal conductivity and chemical stability. This allows their application in high-power electronics and piezoresistive thick-film sensors, where the substrate is subjected to considerable stress. This work examines the impact of processing a range of thick film materials (Ag- and Au-based

Al-Cu matrix composites with a high volume fraction of alumina particles (41-62%) prepared by gas-pressure infiltration are characterized in tension and chevron-notch fracture testing before and after heat-treatment. Their mechanical behaviour is shown to depend markedly on the matrix structure and flow stress, and also on the nature and size of the reinforcement particles. Al-Cu matrix composites free of coarse Al2Cu matrix intermetallics and reinforced with 60 vol% high-strength polygonal alumina particle

The potential of pulp fiber reinforced thermoplastics is currently not fully explored in composites. One of the main reasons is that pulp fibers are extracted for the use in papermaking and are thus not optimized for use as reinforcements in thermoplastics. Furthermore, currently used processing methods constitute several severe thermomechanical steps inducing premature degradation of the fibers. A systematic development of these composite materials requires the study of both these aspects. The goal of this

Multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), catalytically grown by chemical vapour deposition (CVD), have been successfully employed in the development of bulk composites, where aluminium alloys (Al-4%Cu-1%Mg-0.5%Ag, called WFA) or commercial pure magnesium have been used as matrix, while MWCNTs served as interface modifiers and/or reinforcing phase. Four different composites, WFA or Mg reinforced with 25% volume fraction of Al2O3 SAFFIL fibres coated or not with MWCNTs were processed by low pressure infiltration

This work is focussed on a high carbon tool steel used for the production of files. The mechanical properties of the files depend on a hardening thermal treatment that produces a martensitic structure. Thus, the motivation for this work is technological: we want to understand the effects of two types of thermal treatment on the file's mechanical properties. The first is a traditional thermal treatment in a cyanide bath (CN), while the other is performed in a conveyor belt furnace (BF). The files resulting f

Hot tearing, a severe defect occurring during solidification, is the conjunction of tensile stresses which are transmitted to the mushy zone by the coherent solid underneath and of an insufficient liquid feeding to compensate for the volumetric change. In most recent hot tearing criteria, one of the critical issues is the definition of a coherency point which, in low-concentration alloys, corresponds to the bridging or coalescence of the primary phase. A coalescence model has been developed recently using t

A vast class of disordered conducting-insulating compounds close to the percolation threshold is characterized by nonuniversal values of transport critical exponents. The lack of universality implies that critical indexes may depend on material properties such as microstructure, composition etc., and that in principle they can be influenced by suitable applied perturbations leading to important informations about the origin of nonuniversality. Here we show that RuO2-glass compounds can have nonuniversal val
