A common method for creating compliant electrodes for dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) and soft sensors is to incorporate electrically conductive carbon particles into a polymer matrix. However, using unidirectional aligned carbon fibers instead not o ...

We show that including pairing and repulsion into the description of one-dimensional spinless fermions, as in the domain wall theory of commensurate melting or the interacting Kitaev chain, leads, for strong enough repulsion, to a line of critical points i ...

Conformal field theories have been long known to describe the fascinating universal physics of scale invariant critical points. They describe continuous phase transitions in fluids, magnets, and numerous other materials, while at the same time sit at the h ...

The critical path approximation ('CPA') is integrated with a lattice-based approach to percolation to provide a model for conductivity in nanofiber-based composites. Our treatment incorporates a recent estimate for the anisotropy in tunneling-based conduct ...

Sc2Ga2CuO7 (SGCO) crystallizes in a hexagonal structure (space group: P63/mmc), which can be seen as an alternating stacking of single and double triangular layers. Combining neutron, x-ray, and resonant x-ray diffraction, we establish that the single tria ...

Hot tearing is a major defect of solidification processes and welding. It occurs in metallic alloys while they are in the semi-solid state and is caused by a lack of liquid feeding in the mushy zone to compensate solid network openings due to tensile and s ...

Nanogranular metal composites, consisting of immiscible metallic and insulating phases deposited on a substrate, are characterized by two distinct electronic transport regimes depending on the relative amount of the metallic phase. At sufficiently large me ...

We consider the problem of electron transport in segregated conductor-insulator composites in which the conducting particles are connected to all others via tunneling conductances, thus forming a global tunneling-connected resistor network. Segregation is ...

In conductor-insulator nanocomposites in which conducting fillers are dispersed in an insulating matrix, the electrical connectedness is established by inter-particle tunneling or hopping processes. These systems are intrinsically non-percolative and a coh ...

Graphene antidot lattices (GALs) offer an attractive approach to band-gap engineering in graphene. Theoretical studies indicate that the size of the opened gap is sensitive to the shape, size, and architecture of the nanoholes introduced into the graphene ...

The mechanical and electrical properties of nanocomposites created by gold and titanium implantation into Polydimethysiloxane (PDMS) are reported for doses from 1015 at/cm2 to 5x1016 at/cm2, and for ion energies of 2.5 keV, 5 keV and 10 keV. TEM cross-sect ...

This thesis reports on the microstructural analysis of metal ion implanted Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), and on the characterization and modeling of its electrical and mechanical properties. Low energy (below 35 keV) metal ion implantation into PDMS forms m ...

In this thesis we address the description of electrical transport properties of disordered conductor-insulator composites, mostly by numerical Monte Carlo simulations and analytical study of realistic tunnelling-percolation models. Such composites are basi ...

The tunneling-percolation mechanism of conduction in disordered conductor-insulator composites is studied for a realistic continuum model where conducting and impenetrable spherical particles are dispersed in a three-dimensional continuum insulating materi ...

Several organic and inorganic materials have emerged as promising candidates for the active layer of field-effect transistors (FETs) fabricated on flexible substrates. The charge transport models necessary for device optimization in these systems are at di ...

Thick-film technology has found applications on miniaturised hybrid circuits in various fields (automotive electronics, televisions, ...). This technology is also now widely used for the fabrication of force and pressure sensors that use the piezoresistive ...
