Pairs of metal nanoparticles with a sub-10 nm gap are an efficient way to achieve extreme near-field enhancement for sensing applications. We demonstrate an attractive alternative based on Fabry-Perot type nanogap resonators, where the resonance is defined ...

The main objective of this PhD thesis is to link the atomic scale structure to the catalytic properties of self-assembled nanostructures. The growth and characterization of these nanostructures was carried out in an ultra-high vacuum (UHV) chamber initiall ...

Light matter interaction can be boosted by several orders of magnitude by tailoring the photonic environment, thus enabling a wide range of applications. One particular example are plasmonic nanostructures that support localized surface plasmon polariton ( ...

This review presents an update describing binary and ternary semiconductors involving interfacial charge transfer (IFCT) in composites made up by TiO2, CuO, Ag2O and Fe2O3 used in microbial disinfection (bacteria and viruses). The disinfection mechanism, k ...

Air pollution is a major environmental health risk and it contributes to respiratory and cardiovascular diseases and excess mortality worldwide. The adverse health effects have been associated with the inhalation of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and indu ...

Recent advances in the liquid-phase synthesis of metal nanostructures of different sizes and shapes are reviewed regarding their catalytic properties. The controlled synthesis of nanostructures is based on the colloid chemistry techniques in the solution, ...

Development of selective oxidation catalysts is a major concern of modern chemical industry. Among several systems, VTi-oxide based catalysts showed the most promising and versatile, able to catalyse key reactions like oxidation of o-xylene to phtalic anhy ...

Ab initio computation of two-dimensional electronic spectra is an expanding field, whose goal is improving upon simple, few-dimensional models often employed to explain experiments. Here, we propose an accurate and computationally affordable approach, base ...

Continuous hydrothermal flow synthesis (CHFS) of Ni-Fe layered double hydroxide (LDH) leads to waterborne dispersions of 2D nanoplatelets in the range of 10-50 nm in lateral size. Conversion of the as-synthesized LDH nanoplatelet dispersion into inkjet pri ...

In this work, we report on the integration of an atomic force microscope (AFM) into a helium ion microscope (HIM). The HIM is a powerful instrument, capable of imaging and machining of nanoscale structures with sub-nanometer resolution, while the AFM is a ...
