We introduce contextual stochastic bilevel optimization (CSBO) -- a stochastic bilevel optimization framework with the lower-level problem minimizing an expectation conditioned on some contextual information and the upper-level decision variable. This fram ...

Despite the significant progress in recent years, deep face recognition is often treated as a "black box" and has been criticized for lacking explainability. It becomes increasingly important to understand the characteristics and decisions of deep face rec ...

In the past years, deep convolutional neural networks have been pushing the frontier of face recognition (FR) techniques in both verification and identification scenarios. Despite the high accuracy, they are often criticized for lacking explainability. The ...

Risk management has become an essential element in the functioning of modern society. Correct risk identification and assessment are undoubtedly crucial to improving overall safety; nevertheless, often, it is accompanied by the wrong selection of correctiv ...

Research Summary: This article investigates venture capital (VC) decision-making, a process that occurs under changing conditions and limited, ambiguous information. We shed new light on the inherent dynamics of this strategic process. One of the key disti ...

There is a need for a tool that facilitates safety decision-making in the academic environment. As this environment is very different from that of industry or other public sectors, there is no information available on the factors that influence the decisio ...

In this paper, we propose and compare personalized models for Productive Engagement (PE) recognition. PE is defined as the level of engagement that maximizes learning. Previously, in the context of robot-mediated collaborative learning, a framework of prod ...

In this work, we present a simple biometric indexing scheme which is binning and retrieving cancelable deep face templates based on frequent binary patterns. The simplicity of the proposed approach makes it applicable to unprotected as well as protected, i ...

The design of efficient energy systems, through the development of new technologies and the improvement of current ones, requires the use of rigorous process synthesis methods for generating and analysing design alternatives. We introduce a digital twin of ...

Many pathologies cause impairments in the speech production mechanism resulting in reduced speech intelligibility and communicative ability. To assist the clinical diagnosis, treatment and management of speech disorders, automatic pathological speech asses ...

Early and accurate detection of epileptic seizures is an extremely important therapeutic goal due to the severity of complications it can prevent. To this end, a low-power machine learning-based seizure detection implemented on an FPGA is proposed in this ...

Understanding the meaning of value to asset-intensive organizations and their stakeholders has been a long -standing goal of researchers and managers of the asset management community. These issues have become particularly prominent with the publication of ...

In the changing history of city-river relationships, cities are today questioning strategies for “reconciliation”. Thus, rather degraded sites like riverside brownfields represent an important potential for the creation of new sustainable fluvio-neighborho ...

Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR), as the assistance of speech communication between pilots and air-traffic controllers, can significantly reduce the complexity of the task and increase the reliability of transmitted information. ASR application can lead ...

Effective fall-detection and classification systems are vital in mitigating severe medical and economical consequences of falls to people in the fall risk groups. One class of such systems is based on wearable sensors. While there is a vast amount of acade ...

We study the computations that Bayesian agents undertake when exchanging opinions over a network. The agents act repeatedly on their private information and take myopic actions that maximize their expected utility according to a fully rational posterior be ...

This paper studies the operation of multi-agent networks engaged in multi-task decision problems under the paradigm of simultaneous learning and adaptation. Two scenarios are considered:one in which a decision must be taken among multiple states of nature ...

Face recognition has become a popular authentication tool in recent years. Modern state-of-the-art (SOTA) face recognition methods rely on deep neural networks, which extract discriminative features from face images. Although these methods have high recogn ...

Occupant detection and recognition support functional goals such as security, healthcare, and energy management in buildings. Typical sensing approaches, such as smartphones and cameras, undermine the privacy of building occupants and inherently affect the ...

The reuse of structural components in new buildings has great potential to reduce the environmental impacts of the construction sector but remains uncommon practice. An obstacle to its wider implementation is the lack of robust assessment methods and decis ...
