A needle-shaped electrochemical sensor based on platinum electrodes is proposed in this paper. These platinum electrodes provide improved mechanical properties with respect to previous prototypes proposed in literature. This makes them suitable for inserti ...

Direct and online continuous monitoring of anaesthetic intake by the patient's blood stream improves practices in the critical procedure of anaesthesia. Several systems have been proposed to address this challenge. Electrochemical techniques are highly app ...

Bioresorbable implantable medical devices show great potential for applications requiring medical care over well-defined periods of time. Such implants naturally degrade and resorb in the body, which eliminates adverse long-term effects or the need for a s ...

The live demonstration presents the innovative concept of a portable pen-device able to sense anaesthetic compounds over time for improved anaesthesiology practice. A custom Printed Circuit Board (PCB) manage in the event-based quasi-digital domain the sam ...

After a failure of "One-Size-Fits-All" approach on traditional treatment of diseases, the age of multi-faceted personalized medicine came into being for tailoring therapy to get the best response in the highest safety margin. Personalized drug dosage is on ...

Induction of anesthesia with propofol is a largely adopted technique in hospital environments. The correct dosage of this compound is essential to avoid under- or over-anesthesia that may result in serious side-effects. Therefore, in clinical settings, lon ...

Barbiturates, commonly used as general anaesthetics, depress neuronal activity and thus cerebral metabolism. Moreover, they are likely to disrupt the metabolic support of astrocytes to neurons, as well as the uptake of nutrients from circulation. By employ ...

Xenon is known to be a very efficient anesthetic gas, but its cost prohibits the wider use in medical industry and other potential applications. It has been shown that Xe recovery and recycling from anesthetic gas mixtures can significantly reduce its cost ...

Nowadays electric power systems are subject to continuous changes and the needs in the power generation and delivery service are constantly increasing, with a higher complexity of a progressively more distributed network. Because the impact of a failure ca ...

Difficult tracheal intubation assessment is an important research topic in anesthesia as failed intubations are important causes of mortality in anesthetic practice. The modified Mallampati score is widely used, alone or in conjunction with other criteria, ...

Barbiturates are regularly used as an anesthetic for animal experimentation and clinical procedures and are frequently provided with solubilizing compounds, such as ethanol and propylene glycol, which have been reported to affect brain function and, in the ...

Controversy exists regarding the site where anesthetics act in the brain to produce sedation and unconsciousness. Actions in the cerebral cortex and thalamus are likely, although the relative importance of each site is unclear. We used in computo modeling ...

BACKGROUND: We have used a computational model of the thalamocortical system to investigate the effects of a GABAergic anesthetic (etomidate) on cerebral cortical and thalamic neuronal function. We examined the effects of phasic an tonic inhibition, as wel ...

Nowadays, physiological monitoring is imperative for the safety of medical operations. However, systems which monitor the depth of anaesthesia are still far from reliable, such that still some patients may experience the trauma of remaining conscious under ...
