Android apps include third-party native libraries to increase performance and to reuse functionality. Native code is directly executed from apps through the Java Native Interface or the Android Native Development Kit. Android developers add precompiled nat ...

Scala has been developed as a language that deeply integrates with the Java ecosystem. It offers seamless interoperability with existing Java libraries. Since the Scala compiler targets Java bytecode, Scala programs have access to high-performance runtimes ...

Analyzing the security of closed source binaries is currently impractical for end-users, or even developers who rely on third-party libraries. Such analysis relies on automatic vulnerability discovery techniques, most notably fuzzing with sanitizers enable ...

Programming languages are increasingly compiled to multiple runtimes, each featuring their own rich structures such as their object model. Furthermore, they need to interact with other languages targeting said runtimes. A language targeting only one runtim ...

Scala heavily relies on a number of object-oriented abstractions to support its feature-rich collections library. There are known techniques that optimize those abstractions away in just-in-time (JIT) compilers, but applying them in the ahead-of-time (AOT) ...

Metaprogramming is a technique that consists in writing programs that treat other programs as data. This paradigm of software development contributes to a multitude of approaches that improve programmer productivity, including code generation, program anal ...

Maximizing the data throughput is a very common implementation objective for several streaming applications. Such task is particularly challenging for implementations based on many-core and multi-core target platforms because, in general, it implies tackli ...

We present an efficient, modular, and feature-rich framework for automated generation and validation of complex structures, suitable for tasks that explore a large space of structured values. Our framework is capable of exhaustive, incremental, parallel, a ...

We present a new code assistance tool for integrated development environments. Our system accepts free-form queries allowing a mixture of English and Java as an input, and produces Java code fragments that take the query into account and respect syntax, ty ...

Manual software testing is laborious and prone to human error. Yet, among practitioners, it is the most popular method for quality assurance. Automating the test case generation promises better effectiveness, especially for exposing corner-case bugs. Symbo ...

Just-in-time (JIT) compilation of running programs provides more optimization opportunities than offline compilation. Modern JIT compilers, such as those in virtual machines like Oracle's HotSpot for Java or Google's V8 for JavaScript, rely on dynamic prof ...

We consider two approaches for building component-based systems, which we call respectively architecture-based and architecture-agnostic. The former consists in describing coordination constraints in a purely declarative manner through parameterizable glue ...

Parsers are ubiquitous in computing, and many applications depend on their performance for decoding data efficiently. Parser combinators are an intuitive tool for writing parsers: tight integration with the host language enables grammar specifications to b ...

Nowadays medical software is tightly coupled with medical devices that perform patient state monitoring and lately even some basic treatment procedures. Medical guidelines (GLs) can be seen as specification of a medical system which requires their computer ...

Background: Recently, the effects of nanogratings have been investigated on PC12 with respect to cell polarity, neuronal differentiation, migration, maturation of focal adhesions and alignment of neurites. Methodology/Principal Findings: A synergistic proc ...

Parametric polymorphism enables code reuse and type safety. Underneath the uniform interface exposed to programmers, however, its low level implementation has to cope with inherently non-uniform data: value types of different sizes and semantics (bytes, in ...

Unresolved indirect branch instructions are a major obstacle for statically reconstructing a control flow graph (CFG) from machine code. If static analysis cannot compute a precise set of possible targets for a branch, the necessary conservative over-appro ...

The paper presents a novel approach to conduct laboratory experiments in relation with the Control class taught at EPFL. The existing laboratory interface built as a Java applet, which allows students to access experimentation devices locally or remotely, ...

Nowadays, Java is used in all types of embedded devices. For these memory-constrained systems, the automatic dynamicmemorymanager (Garbage Collector or GC) has been always a key factor in terms of the Java Virtual Machine (JVM) performance. Moreover, in cu ...
