Bending-active elastica beam is a structural configuration that is based on the elastic deformation of an initially straight beam. This deformation occurs when horizontal displacements are applied to a sliding support, causing the beam to bend into an arch ...

A porous InGaN/GaN blue light-emitting diode is demonstrated using selective area sublimation. Transmission electron microscopy reveals that the structure is porous down to the Si substrate; however, the porosity is higher in the GaN buffer, while smaller ...

The study was undertaken to gain insight into the micro-mechanisms controlling plasticity at the micrometer scale of elastic-plastic metallic alloys. Dynamic nano-indentation tests, where a small harmonic force amplitude is superimposed during loading, ref ...

This study presents an equivalent pier analysis of the vertical deformation and displacement of full-scale pile groups subjected to mechanical and thermal loads that are associated with a structural support and a geothermal heat exchanger operation, respec ...

Today, it is widely accepted that fatigue is one of the most common failure mechanisms in structural components, and pure static failure is rarely observed. Engineering structures are subjected to complex mechanical fatigue loading histories, which cause d ...

Fluorescent nanodiamonds (fNDs) represent an emerging class of nanomaterials offering great opportunities for ultrahigh resolution imaging, sensing and drug delivery applications. Their biocompatibility, exceptional chemical and consistent photostability r ...

Strain Hardening Ultra High Performance Fiber Reinforced Concretes (SH-UHPFRC) have a high elastic limit (around 10 MPa) and high tensile strength (upto 20 MPa) and exhibit significant strain hardening (1 to 4 %) under tensile loads. These appealing featur ...

Additive Manufacturing (AM) is an emerging part production technology that offers many ad-vantages such as high degree of customization, material savings and design of 3D highly complex structures. However, AM is a complex multiphysics process. Therefore, ...

The performance of crystalline materials varies depending on the considered scale. To understand the size dependence of materials properties, the interaction and evolution of defects are essential. As such, the role played by dislocations is crucial for mo ...

The Critical Shear Crack Theory (CSCT) is a consistent approach used for shear design of one- and two-way slabs failing in shear and punching shear respectively. The theory is based on a mechanical model allowing to determine the amount of shear force that ...

This paper investigates the uniaxial compression behaviour of concrete under different strain rates and its relation to sustained loading. The aim is to observe the strain rate effect on the pre- and post-peak behaviour of concrete. In particular, the deve ...

The low thermal conductivity of nano-crystalline materials is commonly explained via diffusive scattering of phonons by internal boundaries. In this study, we have quantitatively studied phononcrystalline boundaries scattering and its effect on the overall ...

Damage spectra for existing reinforced concrete buildings in Europe are presented in this paper. To this end, a series of time-history nonlinear dynamic analyses for single-degree-of-freedom systems with different deformation ductility values and yielding ...

Sustainable hydrogen production through photoelectrochemical water splitting using hematite (alpha-Fe2O3) is a promising approach for the chemical storage of solar energy, but is complicated by the material's nonoptimal optoelectronic properties. Nanostruc ...

Submonolayer epitaxial growth is obtained by the deposition of less than a complete layer of atoms on a single crystal surface. It is of fundamental interest for industrial applications (e.g. in the semiconductor industry) as well as from the point of view ...
