Central aortic diastolic pressure decay time constant ( ) is according to the two-element Windkessel model equal to the product of total peripheral resistance (R) times total arterial compliance (C ). As such, it is related to arterial stiffness, which has ...

Saliency models are image-based prediction models that estimate human visual attention. Such models, when applied to architectural spaces, could pave the way for design decisions where visual attention is taken into account. In this study, we tested the pe ...

Out-of-body experiences (OBEs) are characterized by the subjective feeling of being located outside one's physical body and perceiving one's own body from an elevated perspective looking downwards. OBEs have been correlated with abnormal integration of bod ...

Knowing where objects are relative to us implies knowing where we are relative to the external world. Here, we investigated whether space perception can be influenced by an experimentally induced change in perceived self-location. To dissociate real and ap ...

Point clouds are effective data structures for the rep- resentation of three-dimensional media and hence adopted in a wide range of practical applications. In many cases, the portrayed data is expected to be visualized by humans. After acquisition, point c ...

Minimax-fair machine learning minimizes the error for the worst-off group. However, empirical evidence suggests that when sophisticated models are trained with standard empirical risk minimization (ERM), they often have the same performance on the worst-of ...

We present FITCOV an approach for accurate estimation of the covariance of two-point correlation functions that requires fewer mocks than the standard mock-based covariance. This can be achieved by dividing a set of mocks into jackknife regions and fitting ...

Professionals in the building design and operation fields typically look at standards and guidelines as a reliable source of information and guidance with regard to procedural, contractual, and legal scope and requirements that are relevant to accountabili ...

We present a comprehensive study shedding light on how thermal fluctuations affect correlations in a Bose gas with contact repulsive interactions in one spatial dimension. The pair correlation function, the static structure factor, and the one-body density ...

With the emergence of social networks and improvements in the internet speed, the video data has become an ever-increasing portion of the global internet traffic. Besides the content, the quality of a video sequence is an important issue at the user end wh ...

Common factors are omnipresent in everyday life, e.g., people who do well in one cognitive test are likely to perform well in other cognitive tests as well, and vice versa. In vision, however, there seems to be a multitude of specific factors rather than a ...

Vision scientists have tried to classify illusions for more than a century. For example, some studies suggested that there is a unique common factor for all visual illusions. Other studies proposed that there are several subclasses of illusions, such as il ...

To overcome the multipath interference in locating transient electromagnetic (EM) radiation sources in an indoor environment, we propose a criterion that calculates the correlation between back-propagated signals from observation points, to be used in EM t ...

Perception depends not only on the current sensory input but also on the preceding history of stimuli. In serial dependence (SD), for example, the orientation of a Gabor patch is mistakenly reported as more similar to previous trials than it actually is. T ...

Determination of left ventricular (LV) end-systolic elastance (E- es ) is of utmost importance for assessing the cardiac systolic function and hemodynamical state in humans. Yet, the clinical use of E- es is not established due to the invasive nature and h ...

Motivated by the goal of designing interventions for softening polarized opinions on the Web, and building on results from psychology, we hypothesized that people would be moved more easily towards opposing opinions when the latter were voiced by a celebri ...

This book provides evidence-informed and practical advice on how to design, teach, and facilitate hands-on, experiential learning in practical higher education settings. With rich case studies and carefully considered analysis tasks, all underpinned by res ...

Background: Falls are a major cause of injuries in older adults. To evaluate the risk of falls in older adults, clinical assessments such as the 5-time sit-to-stand (5xSTS) test can be performed. The development of inertial measurement units (IMUs) has pro ...

We recently found only weak correlations between the susceptibility to various visual illusions. However, we observed strong correlations among different variants of an illusion, suggesting that the visual space of illusions includes several illusion-speci ...

The international experimental program PETALE will be carried out at the CROCUS research reactor of EPFL. The program aims at measuring neutron penetration in slabs made of materials composing typical LWR reactor pressure vessel. The measurements will be u ...
