We investigate the stability of the steady vertical path and the emerging trajectories of a buoyancy -driven annular disk as the diameter of its central hole is varied. The steady and axisymmetric wake associated with the steady vertical path of the disk, ...

In this thesis we study stability from several viewpoints. After covering the practical importance, the rich history and the ever-growing list of manifestations of stability, we study the following. (i) (Statistical identification of stable dynamical syste ...

This thesis presents advancements in the understanding of the plasma conditions leading to the excitation and saturation of the Edge Harmonic Oscillations (EHOs) observed during QH-mode operation in tokamak plasmas. Such operations represent a safer altern ...

In engineering, oscillatory instabilities and resonances are often considered undesirable flow features and measures are taken to avoid them. This may include avoiding certain parametric regions or implementing control and mitigation strategies. However, t ...

Photometric observations from the last decade have revealed additional low-amplitude periodicities in many classical pulsators that are likely due to pulsations in non-radial modes. One group of multimode RR Lyrae stars, the so-called 0.61 stars, is partic ...

We study numerically and theoretically the gravity-driven flow of a viscous liquid film coating the inner side of a horizontal cylindrical tube and surrounding a shear-free dynamically inert gaseous core. The liquid-gas interface is prone to the Rayleigh-P ...

We show that the variational energy principle of the multi-region relaxed magnetohydrodynamic (MRxMHD) model can be used to predict finite-pressure linear tearing instabilities. In this model, the plasma volume is sliced into sub-volumes separated by 'idea ...

Incipient valley formation in mountainous landscapes is often associated with their presence at a regular spacing under diverse hydroclimatic forcings. Here we provide a formal linear stability theory for a landscape evolution model (LEM) representing the ...

Small-scale turbomachinery is increasingly used in carbon-free energy conversion systems, such as commercial or domestic scale heat pumps, fuels cells for transportation and waste heat recovery. The usage of aerodynamic bearings allows the design of compac ...

In this thesis, we study systems of active particles interacting via generic torques of different nature. We analyze the phase behavior of these systems, which results from the interplay between self-propulsion, excluded-volume and torques. We tackle the p ...

The global linear stability of a water drop on hot nonwetting surfaces is studied. The droplet is assumed to have a static shape and the surface tension gradient is neglected. First, the nonlinear steady Boussinesq equation is solved to obtain the axisymme ...

Thermal convection in an inclined layer between two parallel walls kept at different fixed temperatures is studied for fixed Prandtl number . Depending on the angle of inclination and the imposed temperature difference, the flow exhibits a large variety of ...

We study the behavior of solutions to the incompressible 2d Euler equations near two canonical shear flows with critical points, the Kolmogorov and Poiseuille flows, with consequences for the associated Navier-Stokes problems. We exhibit a large family of ...

In a channel flow with a sudden expansion, whether for three-dimensional (3-D) pipe and channel flows, or for two-dimensional (2-D) channel flow, it is known that increasing the Reynolds number beyond a critical value induces a symmetry breaking Pitchfork ...

In this paper, we study local well-posedness and orbital stability of standing waves for a singularly perturbed one-dimensional nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation. We first establish local well-posedness of the Cauchy problem by a fixed point argument. Unlike ...

Verification is the fundamental step that any turbulence simulation code has to be submitted in order to assess the proper implementation of the underlying equations. We have carried out a cross comparison of three flux tube gyrokinetic codes, GENE [F. Jen ...

We show that concurrent atomistic/continuum displacement-coupling methods are inherently unstable in the context of fully dynamic problems at finite temperature. The fundamental origin of the instability is the displacement coupling of two material descrip ...

This paper deals with the initial value problem for a class of degenerate nonlinear parabolic equations on a bounded domain in R-N for N >= 2 with the Dirichlet boundary condition. The assumptions ensure that u (math) 0 is a stationary solution and its sta ...

A precise knowledge of co-axial flow dynamics and a better understanding of the mechanisms that act to destabilize the interface between the two fluids is of fundamental interest in many industrial applications like lubricated transport, injection devices, ...

In this paper we present some heuristic strategies to compute rapid and reliable approximations to stability factors in nonlinear, inf-sup stable parametrized PDEs. The efficient evaluation of these quantities is crucial for the rapid construction of a pos ...
