Life-history theory predicts that iteroparous females allocate their resources differently among different breeding seasons depending on their residual reproductive value. In iteroparous salmonids there is typically much variation in egg size, egg number, ...

The miniaturization of nanometer-sized multicolor fluorescent features is of continuous significance for counterfeit security features, data storage, and sensors. Recent advances in engineering of stimuli-responsive supramolecular polymeric materials that ...

The fluorescence properties of the BODIPY dye and its two meso-substituted derivatives, tert-butyl- and phenyl-BODIPY, are rationalized. The non emissive behavior of the latter two are attributed to the energetically accessible low-lying conical intersecti ...

The main aim of this study was to assess conditions at which simple yeast-based model organism produces maximal levels of protoporphyrin IX (PpIX) after an exogenous administration of its precursor, 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA), and the ferrous-ion chelator ...

Introduction: Diagnosing-prosthetic joint infection (PJI) poses significant challenges, and current modalities are fraught with low sensitivity and/or potential morbidity. Photoacoustic imaging (PAI) is a novel ultrasound-based modality with potential for ...

The recent years have witnessed growing interest in the power of scientific visualization for simulation-based neuroscience. The research presented in this thesis develops methods to generate physically-realistic visualizations of neocortical models recons ...

Photodynamic therapy (PDT), which is based on the activation of photosensitizers with light, can be used to reduce plaque burden. We hypothesized that intra-arterial photosensitizer administration and photo-activation will lead to high and rapid accumulati ...

Within the TORCH (Time Of internally Reflected CHerenkov light) R&D project, a small-scale TORCH prototype module is currently under study. Circular-shaped micro-channel plate photon detectors with finely segmented square anodes (32 x 32 channels) have bee ...

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is based on the combined administration of photosensitizing drugs and light to treat a variety of malignant, pre-malignant and also non-malignant diseases. The reactive species resulting from the excitation of the photosensitizer ...

The development of microfluidics has led to significant improvements in many areas of in vitro diagnostics. This thesis proposes the use of microfluidic device technology in the field of anatomic pathology, leading to faster and more accurate tissue-based ...

The first section of the thesis discusses the development and implementation of a two dimensional Fourier transform spectroscopy setup, that permits the recording of electronic 2D spectra in the visible regime. A hollow core fiber was used to generate broa ...
