We mine from the literature experimental data on the CO2 electrochemical reduction selectivity of Cu single crystal surfaces. We then probe the accuracy of a machine learning model trained to predict faradaic efficiencies for 11 CO2 reduction reaction prod ...

Barocaloric (BC) materials provide cheaper and more energy efficient alternatives to traditional refrigerants. Some liquid alkanes were recently shown to exhibit a colossal BC effect, matching the entropy changes in commercial vapour-liquid refrigerants. D ...

Concrete deterioration is a natural process, which has to be carefully monitored over a the service life of a structure. The Alkali-Silica Reaction (ASR) is a slow-process degradation, which devel-ops over decades and is therefore difficult to predict. Sin ...

Zinc phosphide (Zn3P2) is an earth-abundant semiconductor with promising properties for applications as an absorber in photovoltaics. To beat the 40 years old record power conversion efficiency of solar cells made with this material, a deep understanding o ...

Hybrid lead halide perovskites typically form polycrystalline films that have multiple grain sizes and surface defects. A key engineering challenge toward commercialization is therefore the production of homogeneous, defect-free largearea devices achieving ...

In a joint effort utilizing modified sample preparation, microscopy, X-ray diffraction and micro-fabrication, it became possible to prepare single crystals of the "hidden" phase AlCr2. High-resolution X-ray diffraction analysis is described in detail for t ...

Using density-functional theory (DFT) band-structure calculations, we study the crystal structure, lattice dynamics, and magnetic interactions in the Shastry-Sutherland magnet SrCu2(BO3)(2) under pressure, concentrating on experimentally relevant pressures ...

The electrochemical reduction of CO2 to ethylene provides a carbon-neutral avenue for the conversion of CO2 to value-added fuels and feedstocks, so contributing to the storage of intermittent renewable electricity. The exploration of efficient electrocatal ...

It has been discovered quite recently that Icosahedral Short-Range Order (ISRO) of atoms in the liquid phase of metallic alloys surrounding some trace elements added to the melt can influence both the nucleation and growth of the primary phase. In this wor ...

NMR-based crystallography approaches involving the combination of crystal structure prediction methods, ab initio calculated chemical shifts and solid-state NMR experiments are powerful methods for crystal structure determination of microcrystalline powder ...

Bacteriophages of the myoviridae family, R-type pyocin, Photorhabus virulence cassette (PVC), Serratia antifeeding prophage (Afp) and type 6 secretion system (T6SS) form a class of contractile injection systems that share common structural and functional c ...

Methane dissociation on the step and terrace sites of a Pt(211) single crystal was studied by reflection absorption infrared spectroscopy (RAIRS) at a surface temperature of 120 K. The C−H stretch RAIRS signal of the chemisorbed methyl product species was ...

The use of mixed-linker metal-organic frameworks (MIXMOFs) is one of the most effective strategies to modulate the physical-chemical properties of MOFs without affecting the overall crystal structure. In many instances, MIXMOFs have been recognized as soli ...

This thesis reports on the growth and on the magnetic characterization of nanostructures made of 3d-4d transition metals and rare earths. In all the experiments the nanostructures have been grown by atomic beam epitaxy (ABE) in ultra high vacuum conditions ...

Double perovskite oxides A(2)BB'O-6 combining 3d and 4d or 5d transition metal ions at the B and B' sites feature a variety of magnetic and magneto-electric properties. Targeting Ba2FeOsO6, we synthesized powder samples of nonstoichiometric Ba2Fe1.12Os0.88 ...

We report small-angle neutron scattering measurements of the vortex lattice (VL) structure in single crystals of the lightly underdoped cuprate superconductor YBa2Cu3O6.85. At 2 K, and for fields of up to 16 T applied parallel to the crystal c-axis, we obs ...

We present a systematic study of the crystal-field interactions in the LiRF4 (R = Gd, Ho, Er, Tm, and Yb) family of rare-earth magnets. Using detailed inelastic neutron scattering measurements, we have been able to quantify the transition energies and wave ...

Crystalline argon oxygen decarburization slag, in powdery form, was investigated for its hydration potential by alkali activation and curing at 80 degrees C. Na-silicate and K-silicate of the same modulus were used as activators. Isothermal calorimetry at ...

Cooperative fluorescence resonance energy transfer effect is experimentally demonstrated for a few crystals doped with rare-earth ions. We show that, at the liquid helium temperatures in similar crystals, coherent cooperative fluorescence resonance energy ...

Laue's experiment in 1912 of the diffraction of X-rays by crystals led to one of the most influential discoveries in the history of science: the first determinations of crystal structures, NaCl and diamond in particular, by W. L. Bragg in 1913. For the fir ...
