5G New Radio (NR) has stringent demands on both performance and complexity for the design of low-density parity-check (LDPC) decoding algorithms and corresponding VLSI implementations. Furthermore, decoders must fully support the wide range of all 5G NR bl ...

Time-sensitive networks provide worst-case guarantees for applications in domains such as the automobile, automation, avionics, and the space industries. A violation of these guarantees can cause considerable financial loss and serious damage to human live ...

Time-sensitive networks, as in the context of IEEE Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN) and IETF Deterministic Networking (DetNet), offer deterministic services with guaranteed bounded latency in order to support safety-critical applications. In this thesis, we ...

In 1948, Claude Shannon laid the foundations of information theory, which grew out of a study to find the ultimate limits of source compression, and of reliable communication. Since then, information theory has proved itself not only as a quest to find the ...

Coherent field propagation is an essential computational tool in optics with applications ranging from computational optics and optical design to iterative field reconstructions. An improvement in the computational speed of current propagation methods is t ...

In the last decade, DNA has been increasingly investigated as an alternative medium for cold data storage, presenting several advantages over standard hard drives such as a higher density, longer lifespan and lower energy consumption. However, such coding ...

Antennas have historically been the most common electromagnetic (EM) technology for wireless communication systems. Antenna as hardware is entirely dependent on the EM properties of the materials used, mostly related to the permittivity and permeability. I ...

Lightning discharges, including cloud-to-ground (CG) and intracloud (IC) lightning, are known to emit electromagnetic pulses (EMPs) in a wide frequency band ranging from few Hz up to hundreds MHz [1]. During the breakdown and ionization processes (mostly f ...

Encoding quantum information onto bosonic systems is a promising route to quantum error correc-tion. In a cat code, this encoding relies on the confinement of the dynamics of the system onto the two-dimensional manifold spanned by Schrodinger cats of oppos ...

Dampers are devices that reduce delay jitter in the context of time-sensitive networks, by delaying packets for the amount written in packet headers. Jitter reduction is required by some real-time applications; beyond this, dampers have the potential to so ...

LoRaWAN is nowadays one of the most popular protocols for low-power Internet of Things communications. Although its physical layer, namely LoRa, has been thoroughly studied in the literature, aspects related to the synchronization of LoRa receivers have re ...

Since polar were ratified as part of the 5G standard, low-complexity polar decoders with close-to-optimum error-rate performance have received significant attention. Compared to successive cancellation (SC) decoding, both SC list and SC flip decoding can i ...

The viable and safe application of wireless power transfer for powering bioelectronic implants requires understanding the wave propagation in heterogeneous and dispersive media, the electromagnetic exposure assessment, and the optimum design of the system ...

Compared with the bit-wise successive cancellation list (SCL) decoding of polar codes, the node-based Fast SCL decoding significantly reduces the decoding latency by identifying special constituent codes and decoding these in parallel. To further reduce th ...

Long Range (LoRa) is an emerging low-power wide-area network technology offering long-range wireless connectivity to Internet of Things (IoT) devices. For energy efficiency reasons, LoRa end nodes implement a nonslotted ALOHA multiple access scheme to tran ...

The localization of partial discharges (PD) is important to monitor the conditioning of high voltage insulator materials. One of the key components in power grids is the high power transformer. Localization of PDs in these pieces of equipment can increase ...

The use of model-based numerical simulations of wave propagation in rooms for engineering applications requires that acoustic conditions for multiple parameters are evaluated iteratively, which is computationally expensive. We present a reduced basis metho ...

Deficit Round-Robin (DRR) is a widespread scheduling algorithm that provides fair queueing with variable-length packets. Bounds on worst-case delays for DRR were found by Boyer et al., who used a rigorous network calculus approach and characterized the ser ...

Space-time (ST) wave packets, in which spatial and temporal characteristics are coupled, have gained attention due to their unique propagation characteristics, such as propagation invariance and tunable group velocity in addition to their potential ability ...

The de-facto standard decoding algorithm for polar codes, successive cancellation list (SCL) decoding, is a breadth-first search algorithm. By keeping a list of candidate codewords, SCL decoding improves the performance as the list size L increases. Howeve ...
