Similarly to mechanical structures, stable flows can exhibit resonance when perturbed by an impulsive or harmonic forcing. Swirling wakes and sloshing waves belong to this kind of flows and manifest large energy response when excited close to their natural ...

Adsorption to solid-water interfaces is a major process governing the fate of waterborne viruses in natural and engineered systems. The relative contributions of different interaction forces to adsorption and their dependence on the physicochemical propert ...

The string method is a general and flexible strategy to compute the most probable transition path for an activated process (rare event). We apply here the atomistic string method in the density field to the Cassie-Wenzel transition, a central problem in th ...

Understanding how nanomaterials interact with interfaces is essential to control their self-assembly as well as their optical, electronic, and catalytic properties. We present here an experimental approach based on neutron reflectivity (NR) that allows the ...

The interfaces of water micro- and nanodroplets drive environmental, medical, catalytic, biological, and chemical biphasic processes. The interfacial droplet structure and electrostatics greatly determine the reactivity and efficiency of these processes. D ...

Micro- and nanoscale metallic glasses offer exciting opportunities for both fundamental research and applications in healthcare, micro-engineering, optics and electronics. The scientific and technological challenges associated with the fabrication and util ...

Copolymers of fluoroacrylates have interesting properties like excellent resistance to chemicals, oils and fuels, high thermal stability and high hydrophobicity. This investigation reports the copolymerization of 2,2,3,3,4,4,4-heptafluorobutyl acrylate (HF ...

A gravity-driven droplet will rapidly flow down an inclined substrate, resisted only by stresses inside the liquid. If the substrate is compliant, with an elastic modulus G < 100 kPa, the droplet will markedly slow as a consequence of viscoelastic braking. ...

The synthesis of topologically complex structures, such as links and knots, is one of the current challenges in supramolecular chemistry. The so-called Solomon link consists of two doubly interlocked rings. Despite being a rather simple link from a topolog ...

The use of solvent-free microfluidics to fine-tune the physical and chemical properties of chitosan nanoparticles for drug delivery is demonstrated. Nanoparticle self-assembly is driven by pH changes in a water environment, which increases biocompatibility ...

An ultrafine grained (UFG) bulk Cu with a novel nacre-inspired lamellar structure containing nano-bridges and aligned nanopores at inter-lamellar interfaces was fabricated by consolidation of a nanocrystal-attached ultrathin Cu flake powder by spark plasma ...

Fluid-mediated self-assembly is one of the most promising routes for assembling and packaging smart microsystems in a scalable and cost-efficient way. In this work the pairwise fluidic self-assembly of 100 μm-sized SU-8 cylinders is studied with respect to ...

All mechanical systems, naturally occurring or human-produced, are subjected to friction and wear at the interface of solid constituents. Large portions of energy dissipation and loss of material, in every-day life and industrial applications alike, are du ...

Fluorescent nanoparticles (FNPs) are obtained in water by self-assembly from a polymeric ionic liquid, fluorescent carboxylate moiety, and a surfactant through two main supramolecular interactions, that is, ionic bonds and hydrophobic/hydrophilic interacti ...

A central paradigm of self-assembly is to create ordered structures starting from molecular monomers that spontaneously recognize and interact with each other via noncovalent interactions. In recent years, great efforts have been directed toward perfecting ...

A composite material that leads to self organization of mesogen-coated gold nanospheres is synthesized and shows enhanced anisotropic optical properties due to synergistic effects of the mesogens intrinsic birefringence and its ability to drive the self-as ...

This paper presents the experimental and numerical study of hydrophobic interaction forces at nanometer scale in the scope of engineering micron-sized building blocks for self-assembly in liquid. The hydrophobic force distance relation of carbon, Teflon an ...

The invention describes a composition containing a) a functionalized polymer (10) that comprises at least one polymer segment (13) and at least two polymer aggregating segments (11,12) capable of forming non-covalent bonds based on a supramolecular interac ...

Self-assembly is the autonomous organization of components into patterns or structures without human intervention. At the molecular level, self-assembly usually involves non-covalent interactions of various natures, such as van der Waals, electrostatic and ...

In the present study, we propose a new photocatalytic interface prepared by high-power impulse magnetron sputtering (HiPIMS), and investigated for the degradation of Reactive Green 12 (RG12) as target contaminant under visible light light-emitting diodes ( ...
