Abstract The degradation of metal interconnects (ICs) in Solid Oxide Cells (SOCs) primarily results from chromium (Cr) oxide scale growth on stainless-steel substrates, causing ohmic loss and air-side electrode poisoning by Cr. This thesis addresses these ...

Coating nano particles and other substrates for efficiency enhancement, protection and obtaining new atomic structures is a widespread research topic in catalysis and material synthesis. Thus far, different approaches of coating, ranging from simplest to s ...

Nanomaterials and nanoparticles are nowadays used in a wide range of applications; from sunscreens, paint and food industry to catalytic processes, lighting, TV's and displays, their presence is percolating in our daily life. New applications rise every da ...

Thin film coatings are ubiquitous in modern daily lives, from the semi-conductor industry to aesthetic applications, and rely on the modification of a given material to enhance its surface properties. At CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research), t ...

In this study, photoactive CuxO/TiO2 coatings were prepared using magnetron sputtering operated at different powers and modes (Direct-current magnetron sputtering and High Power Impulse magnetron sputtering). Indoor/outdoor air pollutions (Volatile Organic ...

Modern envelope glazing relies on nanoscale coatings to meet a range of specific needs. Low emissivity coatings can improve the thermal performance of glazing thanks to a thin metallic film. However, the conductive nature of this layer leads to an attenuat ...

Bio-inspired fluorine-free and self-cleaning polymer coatings were developed using a combination of self-assembly and UV-printing processes. Nasturtium and lotus leaves were selected as natural template surfaces. A UV-curable acrylate oligomer and three ac ...

Cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) can be produced in the form of thin, transparent and flexible films. However, the permeability of such materials to oxygen and water vapor is very sensitive to moisture, which limits their potential for a variety of packaging an ...

By designing advantageous cellular geometries and combining the material size effects at the nanometer scale, lightweight hybrid microarchitectured materials with tailored structural properties are achieved. Prior studies reported the mechanical properties ...

Atomic layer deposition (ALD) is unsurpassed in its ability to create thin conformal coatings over very rough and/or porous materials. Yet although the coating thickness on flat surfaces can be measured by ellipsometry, characterization of these coatings o ...

The contamination of air and water is one of the major concerns towards the development of a sustainable world in the 21st century. In this context many efforts are devoted to the design of photocatalytic paints able to degrade chemical and biological impu ...

This thesis addresses the preparation of antibacterial surfaces for hospital facilities taking biomedical thin polymer films, textiles and catheter as probes. Magnetron sputtering is used to apply the coatings leading to fast bacterial inactivation in the ...

Thin polymer films that prevent the adhesion of bacteria are of interest as coatings for the development of infection-resistant biomaterials. This study investigates the influence of grafting density and film thickness on the adhesion of Staphylococcus epi ...

The invention relates to a method for the preparation of a coating comprising at least one coating layer on a solid substrate, said method comprising the steps of a, providing monomers of the type R-(N)x-(L)m-(C≡C)n-(L']o(N')y-R', wherein R is a head moiet ...

Fabrication of wear-resistant omniphobic surfaces is a persistent scientific challenge and essential for various applications such as in paint industries, fluid transport, antifouling, reduction of friction drag on ship hulls, and stain resistant textiles. ...

Improving the aesthetic of solar thermal collectors would grant architects a huge potential for a perfect integration of solar panels into building façades: this can be achieved by coloured interference coatings on the cover glass. These coatings also open ...

This paper describes a novel and scalable method for the fabrication of polymer derived ceramics (PDC) structures with high aspect ratio and micrometre scale features. Elastomeric micro-moulds composed of a filling pot are used to deliver via sacrificial m ...

Ferroelectric ceramic – polymer composites have a unique mix of electrical and mechanical properties. Piezoelectric and pyroelectric activity, a wide range of dielectric constants and high breakdown strength are combined with mechanical flexibility, formab ...

Titanium oxynitride coatings (TiNxO3,) are considered a promising material for applications in dental implantology due to their high corrosion resistance, their biocompatibility and their superior hardness. Using the sputtering technique, TiNxO3, films wit ...

Covering a standard solar thermal collector with a coloured glazing, which is opaque to the human eye but highly transparent to solar energy, permits a perfect architectural integration of solar panels into glazed building façades. The colours are based on ...
