With the emergence of social networks and improvements in the internet speed, the video data has become an ever-increasing portion of the global internet traffic. Besides the content, the quality of a video sequence is an important issue at the user end wh ...

This paper presents a quality evaluation study of point cloud codecs that have been recently standardised by the MPEG committee. In particular, a subjective experiment to assess their performance in terms of bitrate against visual quality is designed and r ...

In my thesis, I reveal several already-existing and emerging challenges in multi-objective management of multiprocessor systems, and address them through novel solutions, from heuristics to RL, depending on the complexity of the problem. Conventional multi ...

Real-time video transcoding has recently raised as a valid alternative to address the ever-increasing demand for video contents in servers' infrastructures in current multi-user environments. High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) makes efficient online trans ...

Delay-constrained streaming from a moving platform is of paramount importance for applications such as the remote control of drones, where a low-delay video stream is required in order to provide visual feedback to the pilot while providing high quality vi ...

The growing requirements for broadcasting and streaming of high quality video continue to trigger demands for codecs with higher compression efficiency. AV1 is the most recent open and royalty free video coding specification developed by Alliance for Open ...

Full immersion inside a Virtual Reality (VR) scene requires six Degrees of Freedom (6DoF) applications where the user is allowed to perform translational and rotational movements within the virtual space. The implementation of 6DoF applications is however ...

The emergence of video streaming applications, together with the users’ demand for high-resolution contents, has led to the development of new video coding standards, such as High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC). HEVC provides high efficiency at the cost of ...

A depth image provides partial geometric information of a 3D scene, namely the shapes of physical objects as observed from a particular viewpoint. This information is important when synthesizing images of different virtual camera viewpoints via depth-image ...

Over the last decades, several technological revolutions have impacted the television industry, such as the shifts from black & white to color and from standard to high-definition. Nevertheless, further considerable improvements can still be achieved to pr ...

Multiview plus depth (MVD) is an emerging video format with many applications, including 3-D television and free viewpoint television. During the broadcast of a compressed MVD video, transmission errors may cause the loss of whole frames, resulting in sign ...

Emerging applications in multiview streaming look for providing interactive navigation services to video players. The user can ask for information from any viewpoint with a minimum transmission delay. The purpose is to provide user with as much information ...

We derive an optimization framework for joint view and rate scalable coding of multi-view video content represented in the texture plus depth format. The optimization enables the sender to select the subset of coded views and their encoding rates such that ...

Scalable video coding is emerging as an efficient alternative to simulcast encoding to distribute the same video content si- multaneously to many users having different terminals and network conditions. In order to select the best combination of video scal ...

The recent MPEG Reconfigurable Media Coding (RMC) standard aims at defining media processing specifications (e.g. video codecs) in a form that abstracts from the implementation platform, but at the same time is an appropriate starting point for implementat ...

Recently, ISO/IEC standardized a dataflow-programming framework called Reconfigurable Video Coding (RVC) for the specification of video codecs. The RVC framework aims at providing the specification of a system at a high abstraction level so that the functi ...

When a stereo pair is formed from two synthesized views, it is unclear whether objective 2D quality metrics can provide a good estimation of the perceived quality. In this paper, this problem is addressed considering a 3D video represented in multiview vid ...

Enabling users to interactively navigate through different viewpoints of a static scene is a new interesting functionality in 3D streaming systems. While it opens exciting perspectives towards rich multimedia applications, it requires the design of novel r ...

The performance of objective quality metrics for high-definition (HD) video sequences is well studied, but little is known about their performance for ultra-high definition (UHD) video sequences. This paper analyzes the performance of several common object ...

Vision sensor networks and video cameras find widespread usage in several applications that rely on effective representation of scenes or analysis of 3D information. These systems usually acquire multiple images of the same 3D scene from different viewpoin ...
