The recent rise in interest in point clouds as an imaging modality has motivated standardization groups such as JPEG and MPEG to launch activities aiming at developing compression standards for point clouds. Lossy compression usually introduces visual arti ...

Reinterpretable cameras are defined by their post-processing capabilities that exceed traditional imaging. We present "SoDaCam" that provides reinterpretable cameras at the granularity of photons, from photon-cubes acquired by single-photon devices. Photon ...

In the field of image acquisition, Dynamic Vision Sensors (DVS) present an innovative methodology, capturing only the variations in pixel brightness instead of absolute values and thereby revealing unique features. Given that the primary deployment of DVS ...

In this paper, we introduce a new solution and underlying architecture that allows remote participants to interact with hosts in a broadcast scenario. To achieve this, background extraction is first applied to video received from remote participants to ext ...

In event-based sensing, many sensors independently and asynchronously emit events when there is a change in their input. Event-based sensing can present significant improvements in power efficiency when compared to traditional sampling, because (1) the out ...

Recent GPU architectures make available numbers of parallel processing units that exceed by orders of magnitude the ones offered by CPU architectures. Whereas programs written using dataflow programming languages are well suited for programming heterogeneo ...

With the emergence of social networks and improvements in the internet speed, the video data has become an ever-increasing portion of the global internet traffic. Besides the content, the quality of a video sequence is an important issue at the user end wh ...

As event-based sensing gains in popularity, theoretical understanding is needed to harness this technology’s potential. Instead of recording video by capturing frames, event-based cameras have sensors that emit events when their inputs change, thus encodin ...

The increasing adoption of smart systems in our daily life has led to the development of new applications with varying performance and energy constraints, and suitable computing architectures need to be developed for these new applications. In this paper, ...

This paper presents a quality evaluation study of point cloud codecs that have been recently standardised by the MPEG committee. In particular, a subjective experiment to assess their performance in terms of bitrate against visual quality is designed and r ...

In my thesis, I reveal several already-existing and emerging challenges in multi-objective management of multiprocessor systems, and address them through novel solutions, from heuristics to RL, depending on the complexity of the problem. Conventional multi ...

The rapid development of digital imaging and video has placed visual contents in the heart of our lives. Digital multimedia span a vast number of areas from business to leisure, including but not limited to education, medicine, accessibility, training, adv ...

We present five studies investigating the predictive validity of thin slices of nonverbal behavior (NVB). Predictive validity of thin slices refers to how well behavior slices excerpted from longer video predict other measured variables. Using six NVBs, we ...

This paper presents new optimization approaches aiming at reducing the impact of memory accesses on the performance of dataflow programs. The approach is based on introducing a high level management of composite data types in dynamic dataflow programming l ...

Full immersion inside a Virtual Reality (VR) scene requires six Degrees of Freedom (6DoF) applications where the user is allowed to perform translational and rotational movements within the virtual space. The implementation of 6DoF applications is however ...

The emergence of video streaming applications, together with the users’ demand for high-resolution contents, has led to the development of new video coding standards, such as High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC). HEVC provides high efficiency at the cost of ...

In a typical video rate allocation problem, the objective is to optimally distribute a source rate budget among a set of (in)dependently coded data units to minimize the total distortion. Conventional Lagrangian approaches convert the lone rate constraint ...

The growing requirements for broadcasting and streaming of high quality video continue to trigger demands for codecs with higher compression efficiency. AV1 is the most recent open and royalty free video coding specification developed by Alliance for Open ...

The design of new streaming systems is becoming a major area of research to deploy services targeted in the Internet-of-Things (IoT) era. In this context, the new High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) standard provides high efficiency and scalability of qual ...

This paper presents shared-variable synchronization approaches for dataflow programming. The mechanisms do not require any substantial model of computation (MoC) modification, and is portable across both for hardware (HW) and software (SW) low-level code s ...
