Does gravity affect decision-making? This question comes into sharp focus as plans for interplanetary human space missions solidify. In the framework of Bayesian brain theories, gravity encapsulates a strong prior, anchoring agents to a reference frame via ...

The prediction of trajectories of buoyancy-driven objects immersed in a viscous fluid is a key problem in fluid dynamics. Simple-shaped objects, such as disks, present a great variety of trajectories, ranging from zig-zag to tumbling and chaotic motions. Y ...

Integration across space and time is essential for the analysis of motion, low contrast, and many more stimuli. A crucial question is what determines the duration of integration. Based on classical models of decision-making, one might expect that integrati ...

Let G be a simple algebraic group over an algebraically closed field F of characteristic p >= h, the Coxeter number of G. We observe an easy 'recursion formula' for computing the Jantzen sum formula of a Weyl module with p-regular highest weight. We also d ...

We present an open-source program irvsp, to compute irreducible representations of electronic states for all 230 space groups with an interface to the Vienna ab-initio Simulation Package. This code is fed with plane-wave-based wavefunctions (e.g. WAVECAR) ...

We study the spectra of non-regular semisimple elements in irreducible representations of simple algebraic groups. More precisely, we prove that if G is a simply connected simple linear algebraic group and φ : G → GL(V ) is a non-trivial irreducible repres ...

More and more intelligent systems have to interact with humans. In order to communicate efficiently, these systems need to perceive and understand us. A key factor of communication is the people's visual focus of attention (VFOA), which is useful to estima ...

We consider the Vlasov–Poisson system with repulsive interactions. For initial data a small, radial, absolutely continuous perturbation of a point charge, we show that the solution is global and disperses to infinity via a modified scattering along traject ...

The human face plays an essential role in social interactions as it brings information about someone's identity, state of mind, or mood. People are, by nature, very good at catching this non-spoken information. Therefore, scientists have been interested in ...

In the classic model of vision, processing is local, feedforward and hierarchical. The first stages of the visual system are retinotopic, i.e., neighboring points in the outside world are mapped onto neighboring photoreceptors of the retina and this is pre ...

Prospective memory (PM) refers to remembering to perform intended actions in the future. Older adults in particular have been shown to be negatively affected by PM tasks that require a high amount of attentional resources (i.e., nonfocal tasks). This age-r ...

Modelling human visual attention is of great importance in the field of computer vision and has been widely explored for 3D imaging. Yet, in the absence of ground truth data, it is unclear whether such predictions are in alignment with the actual human vie ...

Perception depends on reference frames. For example, the "true'' cycloidal motion trajectory of a reflector on a bike's wheel is invisible because we perceive the reflector motion relative to the bike's motion trajectory, which serves as a reference frame. ...

The interaction with the various learners in a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) is often complex. Contemporary MOOC learning analytics relate with click-streams, keystrokes and other user-input variables. Such variables however, do not always capture lear ...

We propose a new method to estimate the 6-dof trajectory of a flying object such as a quadrotor UAV within a 3D airspace monitored using multiple fixed ground cameras. It is based on a new structure from motion formulation for the 3D reconstruction of a si ...

Automatic prediction of salient regions in images is a well developed topic in the field of computer vision. Yet, virtual reality omnidirectional visual content brings new challenges to this topic, due to a different representation of visual information an ...

Eye and gaze movements play an essential role in identifying individuals' emotional states, cognitive activities, interests, and attention among other behavioral traits. Besides, they are natural, fast, and implicitly reflect the targets of interest, which ...

Many visual attributes of a target stimulus are computed according to dynamic, non-retinotopic reference frames. For example, the motion trajectory of a reflector on a bicycle wheel is perceived as orbital, even though it is in fact cycloidal in retinal, a ...

When we look at our environment, we primarily pay attention to visually distinctive objects. We refer to these objects as visually important or salient. Our visual system dedicates most of its processing resources to analyzing these salient objects. An ana ...

Capturing and processing human geometry, appearance, and motion is at the core of computer graphics, computer vision, and human-computer interaction. The high complexity of human geometry and motion dynamics, and the high sensitivity of the human visual sy ...
